A Day at Sea

This morning, SH Vega is sailing back to Iceland from our visit in Greenland. This is the first day of the journey that we have felt any motion on the ship. The seas have just enough swell to cause a fair amount of pitching motion.

The day’s activities begin with a lecture by Brent Alloway titled “Gateway to Hell”, which refers to the eruptive activity at Hekla volcano. Brent’s talk explained how tektonic plate rifting and extension has created a string of volcanos all across Iceland, and around the world.

After Brent’s lecture, I was beginning to feel the effects of the ship’s motion, and returned to our suite to lay down. Fortunately, our suite is located on Deck 5 midship. If you are sensitive to motion, the best location to be is midship and on a lower deck. I should also mention that if you are prone to sea sickness, the ship offers motion sickness tablets for free at Reception.

While I was resting, Rickee attended the 11:15am lecture by Patricia Holm on “Plankton: The Tiny Powerhouses of the Ocean’s Ecosystem”.

Rickee also took part in the 2:00pm visit to the Science Lab where Patricia, Anya and Claire offered a hands-on dive into the marine world.

This afternoon, we were privileged to be invited on a short galley tour hosted by Executive Chef, Amit Rao. Chef Rao heads a team of 11 chefs onboard SH Vega. He showed us some of the state-of-the-art equipment used to prepare large quantities of soups, rice, and fried foods. Galley tours are always informative and interesting and the food onboard SH Vega has been quite good.

All of the bread and pastries are baked onboard, even the candies are handmade.

For dinner this evening, I decided to try out the room service. There is a 24-hour room service menu on the stateroom television, and you can order from the evening Swan Restaurant menu during dinner hours (7 to 9). I ordered an “always available” Caesar Salad and Chicken Yakitori from the Swan menu. I was shocked when the food arrived at our stateroom in only 10 minutes.

I have really enjoyed the Caesar Salad on SH Vega. In fact, I would have to say it is the best Caesar Salad I have had on any cruise ship in 149 cruises. I can’t remember a better one.

The Chicken Yakitori arrived fresh and hot with tender chunks of chicken thigh perfectly grilled and soaked in a sweet Teriyaki glaze. It was really delicious.

Tomorrow, we will be docked in Isafjördur, Iceland, where we have booked a whale watching excursion.
