Day 6 Cozumel, Mexico

This morning, MSC Seascape is docked at Punta Langosta in Cozumel, Mexico. We are the only ship docked at this pier today. Perhaps that is a good thing. There are six other large ships docked at the Puerta Maya main terminal. Punta Langosta is about three miles from the main Cozumel cruise terminal.

We start the day with breakfast at Top Sail Restaurant. As we approach the entrance to the restaurant, we can see that they close at 9:00 am, and it is 9:03 when we arrive. The hostess graciously seats us anyway, even though we showed up late. There are a few other guests still having their breakfast when we are seated.

Eggs Benedict

Eggs over medium

This morning, Rickee’s Eggs Benedict were undercooked with uncooked egg whites pouring out when she cut into them. This is an all-too-common problem with poached eggs for some reason. My three eggs ordered over-medium were really over-hard with virtually no runny yolk. A perfectly cooked over-medium egg should have fully cooked egg white and slightly cooked yolk. It can’t be that difficult because I can do it at home!

The crispy bacon was good, even though the waiter forgot to bring my order of bacon. The hash brown is the McDonalds’ variety: A pre-formed potato cake that has been deep fried. We would rate the breakfast a 6 out of 10.

After breakfast, we disembark MSC Seascape for a walk into Punta Langosta to the shopping terminal, mainly just to get in some exercise. We have been here several times, and as I mentioned in a previous blog post, we do not have any excursions booked on this cruise. We have done just about every excursion there is to do in Cozumel. We even rented a Harley one year and took a tour of the island on two wheels!

The walk to Punta Langosta terminal only takes about five minutes.

Punta Langosta terminal and shopping

Once inside the shopping area, you will find a lot of souvenir shops, and of course, the ubiquitous Diamonds International, et al. We did find a pharmacy where I was able to purchase some Ivermectin, albeit at a ridiculously high price. Why we can’t buy this Nobel Peace Prize winning drug over the counter in America is beyond me.

Shopping opportunities

Since MSC Seascape is the only ship docked here, the crowds are not overwhelming. We see many guests dining at Señor Frogs Mexican Restaurant. Is this something you do when in Mexico? Living in Texas, we can get good Mexican food any time we want it, so it is not a big deal to us. And, of course, there are plenty of signs in front of which you can stand for a photo op. The tourist in us can’t resist the pictures.

Other guests will routinely offer to take our picture in front of these signs, and of course, we return the favor.

Being tourists

As we return to the ship, we are once again lured into the comfort of the MSC Yacht Club tent where they have comfortable seating in the shade. The Yacht Club tent is another little perk of sailing in the MSC Yacht Club and it does make you feel special when you return to the ship.

Yacht Club guests are offered lemon water or pineapple water in the comfort station.

Once back onboard, we head to Deck 8 to get some more steps in. Remember, our goal is 10,000 steps each day. However, we have been falling a little short of that goal on this cruise. Deck 8 is not a true Promenade Deck and there are a lot of wind barriers that you have to weave in and out of during a walk. Also, on sea days, there are a lot of guests that you have to navigate around.

Deck 8 Walking

After our large breakfast, we decide that a single slice of pizza from the Marketplace Buffet will suffice for lunch. I choose a slice of Pepperoni and Rickee opts for a slice of Margherita. The pizza on MSC’s buffet is very good. In our opinion, it is still the best item the buffet has to offer.

After a day of relaxation, we make our way back to the Top Sail Lounge for a pre-dinner cocktail. The lounge always has a nice selection of snacks available.

Snacks available at Top Sail Lounge

The Top Sail Restaurant begins seating guests at 5:30pm this evening so we opted for an early dinner. We were seated at a table for two overlooking the lounge..

Lunch and dinner service begins with a bread selection. Our favorite has been the sourdough rolls. All of the breads have been delicious, and in most cases, they are served warm.

Bread selection

For my starters, I ordered the Italian Wedding Soup and the Maryland Crab Cake. The soup was served hot and was perfectly seasoned. It was very good, a 9 out of 10. The crab cake was crispy and had a good flavor, but was served lukewarm. Food temperature seems to be a recurring issue at the Top Sail Restaurant.

We ordered the Vegetable Spring Rolls, which were not even lukewarm, they were cold. The Hoisin-Peanut dipping sauce was okay, but Thai Sweet Chili sauce would have been a better choice. If the Spring Rolls had been hot, they would get an 8 out of 10, but served cold, we can only rate these a 4 out of 10.

Rickee’s Spring Salad was served with a creamy Avocado dressing. Unfortunately, some of the lettuce had brown edges and the tomatoes had no color whatsoever, so this salad only gets a 7 out of 10 from her.

Rickee ordered the Grilled Mediterranean Sea Bass served atop what can best be described as a potato foam, which was very good. She rates the Sea Bass an 8 out of 10. My Cabernet Braised Beef Short Rib was fork tender and very flavorful. The gorgonzola polenta was delicious. This gets an easy 8 out of 10 from me.

For dessert, Rickee ordered the Peach Cobbler. Rickee is more of a dessert eater than I am. Nevertheless, I did try a bite. We are Southerners, and to us, this dish was more like a Peach Crumble than a “cobbler”.

Tomorrow is another day at sea as MSC Seascape makes her way back to Galveston, Texas.
