Dynjandi Waterfall
This morning we awoke to an almost surreal glass-like water in the fjord. This is our last day aboard SH Vega and it proved to be one of the most spectacular so far. Make sure to follow us on Instagram for photos from the journey @cruisereport.
We start today with our final wet landing of this cruise. For the last time, we will put on our Muck boots, parkas, lifevests and waterproof pants. The landing site this morning is very slippery with moss and seaweed covering the rocks.
Our final wet landing
We can already see the huge waterfall from the landing site. This has to be one of the most impressive waterfalls we have ever encountered.
As we hike toward the waterfall, there are many smaller waterfalls downstream from Dynjandi. There are several observation platforms on the hike up to the waterfall, each with its own spectacular view. Rickee decides to stay at one of the lower levels while I attempt to walk up higher to see more and get a closer look.
The farther up the rocky path I go, the more strenuous the hike becomes. The rocks and mud can be slick and one could easily slip and fall on the climb. Fortunately, the Muck boots have very sticky soles that do well in this environment.
From one vantage point, I am able to get a good shot of SH Vega, waiting for our return.
I did not make it all the way to the top of the path, but I got close enough to get some amazing photos and video of the falls. I plan to include this in my video to be posted on our YouTube channel. So, make sure you are subscribed!
When we re-board SH Vega, we can see that lunch has been moved up to the Pool Deck. The crew will usually offer lunch on the Pool Deck and Club Lounge whenever weather permits. And, the weather today is absolutely perfect for al fresco dining.
Today, the team of chefs have prepared an elaborate, and delicious, Asian-themed buffet..

Just as everyone was heading to Deck 7 for lunch, the call came over the PA system that whales had been spotted by the Captain. Many guests rushed to the outer decks to catch a glimpse. The Swan’s Nest on Deck 6 forward quickly filled up with anxious whale watchers.
Whales spotted in the distance
We saw many humpback whales from the aft Pool Deck. The Captain masterfully positioned the ship so that the whales just seemed to appear right before us. In fact, we saw more whales from the Pool Deck during lunch that we did on our whale watching excursion!

This afternoon, we were treated to another excellent and insightful lecture by SETI Institute’s Dr. Becca Robinson. Today we learned about the moons on Jupiter and Saturn and how scientists have discovered evidence of water on both moons.

After Becca’s lecture, we began the arduous task of packing for the trip home. At 6pm this evening, we were back in the Observation Lounge for the Captain’s Farewell Reception. Executive Chef Rao was near the entrance to the lounge preparing caviar for everyone to enjoy with their cocktails.

Captain Lyubomir soon took the stage and thanked all of the guests for being on this unique expedition to Iceland and Greenland. As I have stated previously, Captain Lyubomir is one of the most personable Captains with which we have ever sailed in 149 cruises.

As is tradition with a Captain’s Farewell, the Captain introduced and praised members of his Senior Staff and other crew members during the reception. The staff and crew of SH Vega has truly been amazing.

After the reception, guests are invited back to the Pool Deck on Deck 7 aft for special BBQ buffet dinner. Tables are set with linen tablecloths for tonight’s dinner. Guests not wishing to dine outdoors can opt to sit indoors at the Club Lounge.
BBQ Dinner at Pool Deck
There was a huge spread of food at the BBQ with a pasta station, BBQ pork ribs, rack of lamb, BBQ chicken, salmon and lots of side dishes and amazing desserts. There was way too much to show here.

After dinner, we went down to Deck 3 to say goodbye to the amazing spa staff. On this sailing, I was treated to a pedicure from Charlize (right) and Rickee enjoyed a facial treatment from Indra. Even though the spa and beauty salon on SH Vega is very small, the treatments offered are excellent.

After dinner, it is time to return to our suite and finish packing for the trip home tomorrow. This was our 149th cruise and it was one of the most memorable ones yet. We love expedition cruising and Swan Hellenic really knows how to conduct an expedition cruise. We want to thank the Captain, Hotel Director and the entire staff and Expedition Team for an amazing 10-night sailing. Watch for our upcoming review on our YouTube channel.
