Pre-Cruise in Izmir, Turkey
Whenever traveling internationally, we typically fly into the city of embarkation a couple of days ahead of the cruise. This allows us to shed some of the jet lag, and have a day to explore the city of embarkation. In some major ports, we may even spend three or four days to take in all there is to see or do in a city. We flew into Izmir two days before our five-night cruise aboard the brand-new Emerald Kaia luxury yacht. Our pre-cruise hotel is the Park Inn Radisson in Izmir.

Since we arrived at our hotel at 11pm, we went straight to bed. The next morning, I let Rickee sleep in while I went to check out the hotel’s breakfast buffet. It was one of the most unique buffets I have seen. The buffet appears to be aimed more at local tastes than American or British tastes. There were no scrambled eggs, and no bacon. I cannot recall ever seeing a buffet without bacon. They did have some sausages that were quite good. You can get eggs cooked fresh to order, which I did.

I ordered three eggs over medium and, while they were closer to over easy, they were the beautiful European-style eggs with the darker orange yolks which are not only more visually appealing, but I think have better flavor. They were very good.
After breakfast, and completing my daily travel blog, Rickee and I headed out to do some exploring. The hotel is located just steps away from the shoreline and a very nice waterfront walkway.

Soon, we come upon a park with an excellent walkway and bicycle paths. Some locals are setting up picnics right on the ground to enjoy their lunch. It is a beautiful day, albeit a bit windy. As we walk farther into the park, we come upon the impressive Independence Monument dedicated to the Turkish war for independence.

Since today is Sunday, many of the waterfront cafes and restaurants appear to be closed. However, we did find one small cafe open and were able to try a glass of traditional Turkish tea. Turkey has a huge tea culture and this is something you have to try when visiting Turkey.
Turkish tea
After our tea, we walked back to our hotel where the effects of jet lag had begun to take effect. Rickee spent most of the afternoon reading, while I took a nap. At around 7pm, we were invited to dinner by our Emerald Cruises host(ess), Alexa. Five of us met in the hotel lobby and began our walk to the restaurant.
Walking to dinner
Alexa had pre-arranged reservations at Deniz Restaurant, which many claim to be the best restaurant in Izmir.
Deniz Restaurant
Our table had a nice view of the sun as it sank into the sea.

Our waiter brought a massive selection of mezzes for us to choose from, all of which were served family style. I think we selected at least seven different mezzes, and two portions of some of them to share. Every one we tried was amazing.
Mezze selection
The mezze was served with baskets of toasted breads which were also very good.
Excellent bread selection
The restaurant has a case where you can select your fresh fish, and they have a huge variety. Our waiter brought a platter by the table where we could select one of the fish options. I ordered the lamb shish with rice, which was delicious. Rickee and I are not big on seafood. She did order a fried shrimp which she devoured.
Fresh fish selection
It was a great evening of good food, good wine and great conversation with new and old friends. It was the perfect way to begin a cruise adventure. Tomorrow, we will embark Emerald Kaia In Kusadasi, Turkey.
