Virgin Voyages Standardizes on Aruba ESP to Deliver Exceptional Sailor Experiences

From Spa Appointments to Shake for Champagne™, Award-Winning Cruise Line Offers Luxurious Onboard Amenities via Aruba Wi-Fi Network

SAN JOSE, Calif. – August 2, 2022 – Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company (NYSE: HPE), today announced that Virgin Voyages is deploying an end-to-end Aruba ESP (Edge Services Platform) network to deliver world-class, premium experiences aboard all four of their inaugural fleet of “lady ships.” Working with DeCurtis Corporation, Virgin Voyages set out to create an extraordinary, technology-enabled cruise experience. Headquartered in Plantation, Florida, Virgin Voyages is a joint venture between the Virgin Group and Bain Capital.

Virgin Voyages currently have two award-winning ships deployed, and two more in development, all with a capacity of nearly 4,000 passengers and crew members on each ship. Scarlet Lady was named Cruise Critic’s “Best New Cruise Ship for 2021,” and both Scarlet and Valiant Lady received top spots on Condé Nast Traveler’s Cruising Hot List for 2022. As an exclusively adult cruise experience, Virgin Voyages offers a sanctuary at sea for the 18+ traveler with 20+ unique dining options, immersive entertainment and wellness-forward programming.

“From the time a Sailor books their trip or uses mobile ticketing, all on-board experiences up through departure at the end of their journey, is enhanced by technology,” said Frank Farro, vice president of Technology at Virgin Voyages. “A favorite luxury indulgence for Sailors is our unique “Shake for Champagne™” feature. By simply shaking their phone with the Virgin Voyages app open, and pressing a button, crew is alerted to deliver chilled champagne to the Sailor wherever they are on the ship. The same capability is extended to other services such as Ship Eats, to guarantee high-touch service to each Sailor’s dining, snacking and eating experience.”

A primary goal for Virgin Voyages is to deliver a premier Sailor experience by providing real-time services and always-on connectivity for crew members to facilitate fast, reliable service. For example, if a crew member sees a maintenance issue, they can open a repair ticket on their issued device, and it immediately goes to the right person to address the issue. The technology behind these capabilities is ubiquitous for crew members and transparent to Sailors, creating a seamless five-star experience wherever they are on the ship.

Another important goal for Virgin Voyages is to provide location-based quality of service via location-based data. One powerful example of this is by dramatically reducing the time Sailors stand in line. Virgin Voyages created a virtual queuing system so that Sailors don’t have to congregate in long lines. Instead, the Virgin Voyages app alerts them when it’s their turn to board the ship, sit for dinner, enter the spa, or disembark in their Port of Call, Virgin Voyages’ focus on a frictionless experience allows Sailors to relax and enjoy the amenities, rather than waiting in lines or dealing with service-related issues.

To achieve frictionless, location-based services that enable world-class Sailor services, Virgin Voyages looked to trusted technology partner DeCurtis Corporation. With a vast range of experience working with some of the world’s best, most-recognized hospitality brands, DeCurtis and Virgin Voyages were looking to transform existing Sailor experiences to make them better, faster and more impactful through creative application of the latest technology.

In cooperation with DeCurtis and Aruba, Virgin Voyages selected and deployed a flexible, resilient Aruba ESP network including Aruba Wi-Fi 6 access points with built-in location services, as well as access switches. Additionally, Virgin Voyages uses ClearPass for network access control (NAC) and policy management, and AirWave for network management.

“It was the Aruba team that stepped up to work with our Virgin Voyages team as well as our partners DeCurtis and Axians to solidify and enhance a comprehensive network for our ships,” explained Farro. “The Aruba team in the yard, on the ship, and the team behind helping those two teams, have all been responsive and engaged.”

Virgin Voyages has seen multiple benefits of their new Aruba network, including reliability, seamlessness, and scalability. “The network is built to accommodate around 15,000 devices,” said Farro. “This includes crew devices, PCs, laptops and tablets, in addition to tablets and TVs in each cabin, as well as in the crew rooms. Add on top of that the myriad of devices each Sailor brings onboard. The seamless experience is best illustrated in our ability to duplicate ‘smart home’ features in each cabin, which are controlled by the app on the cabin tablets. When a Sailor walks in and their cabin is in nighttime mode, the lights automatically come on and the curtains close. It’s just an incredible experience.”

Looking to the future, Virgin Voyages will continue delivering transparent but ubiquitous high-touch Sailor services and expand features such as wayfinding. Their focus will remain on making sure that Sailors’ devices seamlessly connect to the internal Wi-Fi network, so they don’t even have to think about connectivity from boarding to departure and everything in between.

Swan Hellenic unveils 2023 season of cultural expedition cruises across 7 continents, with all three new ships in its purpose-designed fleet exploring worldwide

As the iconic company’s second ship, SH Vega, sails on its inaugural arctic cruise, the cultural expedition cruise pioneer reveals it’s set to return to its roots with SH Diana, its third and largest vessel, exploring sites of antiquity across the Mediterranean from 2023

Nicosia, Cyprus: Today, Monday the 25th of July 2022, Swan Hellenic released full details of its 2022-2023 cultural expedition cruises, offering an extraordinary choice worldwide as its fleet grows to two and then three purpose-built, ultramodern ice-class expedition cruise ships. Exploring across seven continents, the adventurous and curious-minded can now access unique experiences previously out of reach. What’s more, Swan Hellenic is celebrating the arrival of its full fleet on the waves with Early Swan Savings of 30% off its brochure prices for all bookings made between now and the end of September 2022.*

As the 2023 season unfolds, SH Minerva will be centred on the Pacific, SH Vega on the Atlantic and West Africa, and SH Diana on the Mediterranean, Red Sea and East Africa. Swan Hellenic has provided an interactive world map to portray and assist exploration of this unique world coverage.

SH Vega, the twin sister ship of SH Minerva, which recently sailed from Tromsø, Norway, for a season of maiden cruises exploring the magic of the Arctic, will be making her way in a full circle around the Atlantic, coasting the Americas to cruise Antarctica from November until March 2023, when she sails up the West Coast of Africa to the Canary Islands and Western Europe for her Arctic season.

Exceptional highlights include her “touching the islands” crossing from Ushuaia to Cape Town via Tristan da Cunha, the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world. Then there’s the astonishing, timeless world of the Conkouati Reserve in the Republic of the Congo, home to forest elephants, lowland gorillas, buffalo, leopards, chimpanzees, red river hogs, humpback dolphins and leatherback turtles, the largest living turtle species in the world. Or how about the South Loango National Park in Gabon? Known as “Africa’s Last Eden”, it’s a paradise of savanna, pristine beach, forest, and mangroves where you can see elephants, buffalos, hippos, gorillas and leopards make their way out onto the white sand beaches while humpback whales and orca swim by.

Equally noteworthy are the Bissagos Islands in Guinea-Bissau, another exploration opportunity unique to Swan Hellenic, with a fascinating indigenous culture featuring strong matriarchal characteristics and a history of fierce and successful resistance to early colonisation.

Swan Hellenic’s third and largest next-generation ship, SH Diana, will see the pioneering company return to its roots, sailing the length and breadth of the Mediterranean, but then also voyaging from the Red Sea to East Africa and beyond.

Standouts here will naturally be the many historic sites of culture and religion across the Mediterranean - including the lesser-known ancient Roman centres of North Africa - all explored with unusual insight thanks to the talks and company of international experts throughout each cruise. But many curious minds will be no less irresistibly attracted by the coral atoll of Aldabra in the outer Seychelles, home to one of the very largest tortoises in the world and the last surviving flightless bird in the Indian Ocean region, the white-throated rail. Then there’s the typically Swan Hellenic opportunity to discover another Zanzibar, immersed in the comparative tranquillity of the small town of Lamu, steeped in Arabic tradition and living testimony to a fascinatingly different history of colonisation.

SH Minerva will return to Antarctica for a full season before embarking on an exceptional semi-circumnavigation of the globe from Ushuaia to Dunedin, New Zealand, exploring the vast expanses of the White Continent and islands of the South Pacific. Highlights of her Pacific season include expeditions in Bali and Komodo with their vibrant traditions and extraordinary wildlife, as well as to explore the richly rewarding lesser-known regions of Papua New Guinea.

Australia’s the Kimberley will be a massive draw. One of the continent’s remotest, most unspoilt and sparsely populated regions, it was in fact among the first to be settled by humans (around 65,000 years ago). Here, they developed a complex culture with yam agriculture, striking art and some of the earliest boomerangs. Swan Hellenic is offering a choice of four separate cruises to explore the Kimberley's extraordinary landscapes, fascinating wildlife and unique Wandjina Aboriginal art, visiting unforgettable locations that are inaccessible by road. Think cliff and cave art, Horizontal Falls, humpback whales, mangroves and sea crocodiles.

Indonesia’ s Raja Ampat archipelago is sure to prove another irresistible attraction. Straddling the Equator at the heart of the Coral Triangle, it hosts the richest marine biodiversity on earth. But then, Swan Hellenic has also ensured the alure of Japan is stronger than ever. Voyaging where others can’t, SH Minerva is not only taking guests to explore its justly famous and diverse cities, but also enabling them to discover magical remote landscapes and fisher ports that have retained the vigour of their traditional lifestyles for hundreds of years.

With such an extensive choice across all 7 continents worldwide, the adventurous-minded are sure to be captivated by more than one Swan Hellenic cultural expedition cruise. Every one of them is available to explore now on an interactive world map and the Swan Hellenic website, with the company’s generous 30% Early Swan Savings immediately available.

About Swan Hellenic

Swan Hellenic was relaunched in July 2020 to proudly continue the spirit of cultural expedition cruising the company pioneered in the 1950s. Building on its British roots, the new company has a global cultural cruising outlook dedicated to providing guests with the opportunity to ‘see what others don’t’.

Swan Hellenic's purpose-built ships feature elegant Scandi-design interiors, extensive outdoor spaces and dedicated expedition facilities. SH Minerva and SH Vega, two new 5-star Polar Code PC 5 expedition cruise ships with ice-strengthened hulls, respectively launched in December 2021 and arriving in July 2022, each accommodate 152 guests in 76 spacious suites and staterooms, the majority with large balconies. A slightly larger PC 6 ice-class vessel, SH Diana, accommodating 192 guests in the same distinctive comfort and style in 96 staterooms and suites will be arriving in early 2023.

All three ships feature 3 dining venues – the Swan Restaurant, Club Lounge and Pool bar & Grill – and are being built in full compliance with SOLAS Safe Return to Port requirements. Dedicated to guests with a passion for adventure and cultural exploration, the company’s meticulously planned itineraries explore the wild landscapes, wildlife, peoples and unique cultures of the world’s less travelled regions.

In anticipation of this milestone season, Aurora is offering travelers some unbeatable offers, with up to 20% off all Antarctica voyages for the 2022/23 season, for bookings made by Aug. 31, 2022.

After a hugely successful resumption of operations to the region earlier this year, Aurora Expeditions will be returning to Antarctica and operating two ships for the first time – its purpose-built vessels, the Greg Mortimer and the brand-new Sylvia Earle. Voyages will be operating from the ports of Ushuaia, Argentina and Punta Arenas, Chile.

“We are incredibly excited for the start of the upcoming season, where we will be operating two ships in Antarctica for the first time,” said Hayley Peacock-Gower, chief marketing officer of Aurora Expeditions. “In anticipation of this season, we wanted to give travelers looking for a life-changing experience the opportunity for some extraordinary savings for the trip of a lifetime. In South Georgia, jagged peaks and glaciers create a breathtaking backdrop for beaches crowded with elephant and fur seals, and countless penguins.

Available Activities: Shackleton’s Crossing on Foot, Sea kayaking, snorkeling

Embrace the spirit of polar exploration on this classic expedition to the coveted white continent. Sail across the famed Drake Passage, admiring spectacular seabirds and approaching the ice as the explorers of old did: by sea. Available activities: Camping, Snowshoeing, Ski/snowboard touring, Sea Kayaking and more

Famed for its tremendous tabular icebergs, year-round sea ice, fascinating fossils and the pivotal role it played in Shackleton’s Endurance expedition, the Weddell Sea offers unsurpassed opportunities for exploration. Embark on a true Antarctic expedition as we not only explore the west Antarctic Peninsula, but also attempt to venture east towards the icy perimeter of the Weddell Sea, often guarded by impenetrable pack ice and home to awe-inspiring tabular icebergs.

Experience the awe-inspiring immensity of Antarctica yourself, reducing your time on the high seas by flying across the Drake in at least one direction. Immerse yourself in the unimaginable beauty of the Antarctic Peninsula, where vast glaciers tumble into the sea, penguins are dwarfed by soaring peaks and humpback and minke whales feast on abundant krill.

Available activities: Sea kayaking, Snorkeling

  • NAPLES TO LISBON – March 25 - April 3

Another first for a Silversea World Cruise, guests will spend a night in Naples—the capital of Italy’s Campania region—on a segment that leads to Lisbon. The following day, travellers will explore Paris before returning to Silver Dawn. In Amsterdam, guests will have the opportunity to tour the endless tulip fields at the best time of year, guided by a third-generation tulip grower, to learn about this staple of local culture. Copenhagen, one of Scandinavia’s most beautiful cities, will welcome guests with a rich culinary culture and 15 Michelin-starred restaurants.

During overnight calls in Oslo and Reykjavik, travellers will gain insight on the fascinating maritime history of Norway in one of Scandinavia’s most vibrant cities, as well as the incredible nature that surrounds Iceland’s capital. Azamara® Announces the Removal of Its Embarkation COVID-19 -Testing Requirement

Beginning July 25, the upmarket cruise line will no longer require pre-cruise COVID-19 -testing for guests, excluding ports where pre-travel testing is still needed

MIAMI, July 19, 2022  Azamara – the upmarket cruise line dedicated to Destination Immersion® experiences – is pleased to announce the removal of its COVID-19 embarkation testing requirement starting July 25, 2022, excluding ports where it is still required in accordance with country regulations.

To ensure the health and safety of its guests and crew, Azamara will still require proof of vaccination prior to embarkation. Azamara recommends that all guests departing from any port get tested at their leisure prior to travel to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience, but those results will not be required to board an Azamara vessel. The pre-cruise testing remains as a requirement for travelers embarking in a port where these protocols remain. In those cases, guests will still need to produce a negative COVID-19 test before sailing. A list of these ports is provided here

“The easing of our testing policy marks a step in the right direction towards a return to normalcy for the travel and cruising industry,” said President of Azamara, Carol Cabezas. “Cruising is one of the safest ways to travel, and our existing health and safety protocols onboard will ensure peace of mind for our guests and crew as we move forward.”

Azamara maintains a strong commitment to wellness through its ‘Explore Well at Sea’ program, keeping guests’ safety a top priority. The company still requires that all guests 12 years of age or older must be fully vaccinated at least 14 days before sailing with all required COVID-19 vaccine doses. Azamara crew are required to be fully vaccinated. COVID-19 testing will continue to be available to guests onboard as needed.

UnCruise Adventures Skiff Partially Flooded in Bartlett Cove

The Small Ship Adventure Cruise Line Reports Positive Response to Partially Submerged 27-Foot Open Deck Skiff

JUNEAU, AK, July 19, 2022 – UnCruise Adventures experienced an incident shortly after departing the Bartlett Cove dock in Glacier Bay National Park on July 18th.  The incident happened after a successful day’s operations. While maneuvering away from the dock the 27-foot open deck skiff towed by the Wilderness Legacy began flooding for unknown reasons and partially submerged. No passengers or crew were aboard the skiff, and all are in good spirits. The company’s immediate priority was to recover the two portable, six-gallon fuel containers and coordinate with federal and private response management. It has been determined that the environmental impact from this is minimal with an estimated two cups of gasoline escaping inside the boom the crew set up around the skiff. Due to the minor nature of the incident, the US Coast Guard will not deploy a team.

“Our immediate priority is to assure minimal environmental impact. We were pleased to remove the two portable gas containers” shares, UnCruise Adventures CEO Captain Dan Blanchard. “We have engaged with the appropriate local authorities and immediately enacted action plans via our Captain and crew. I look forward to quickly resolving this and returning our guests to normal operations shortly.”

The company expects to return to operations with guests by the end of the day. Guests onboard will be provided an appropriate remuneration or reimbursement for the adventure cruise interruption. The preparedness of the Wilderness Legacy Captain and crew confirmed a positive outcome for the unexpected incident and demonstrated the emergency preparedness of the crew.

VIRGINIA COUPLE SPENDS 1,000 DAYS CRUISING ON CARNIVAL

Nancy and Robert Houchens Celebrate 1000 Days with Carnival

Avid Cruisers Mark Major Milestone on Carnival Pride

Robert and Nancy Houchens, a retired couple from Virginia, spend most of their time on cruise ships, and recently reached a milestone while on Carnival Pride: 1000 days at sea on a Carnival Cruise Line ship.

As they sailed the Norwegian Fjords, Robert asked the ship’s team to surprise Nancy with a celebration to mark the occasion. Of course, Carnival Pride’s crew members were happy to oblige.

The Houchens have been cruising for decades, so we asked them what they love about life on the high seas.

Why do you cruise?

Nancy: For us, cruising is a way of life. Our goal was to sell everything we owned and pretty much live on cruise ships. And we’ve done a pretty good job of it since we’ve retired.

When did you start cruising?

Robert: More than 20 years ago when our kids were still at home. At first, we cruised because it was a great value.

You’ve made many memories aboard many ships, what stands out?

Nancy: Carnival Pride has a lot of memories for us. It’s a very special ship. We were so lucky because we were invited when Pride came back into service from Baltimore last September. We were asked to take part in the opening ceremony with Carnival’s President Christine Duffy and it was absolutely wonderful – very emotional.

What is your favorite place on board a Carnival ship?

Robert: Serenity deck.

Nancy: Yes, we love the Serenity deck. We used to do the nightclub, partying and staying up all night, but now we like to relax. Also, the beds. You can’t sleep anywhere like you can at sea on the beds.

After spending 1000 days at sea, you must have many friends across the Carnival fleet.

Nancy: Yes, we have family all over the fleet, meaning the team members on board. They have become family to us!  Now we try to figure out what team members are on a particular ship, and that’s how we pick which cruise we want to go on. After cruising for so long, we’ve got a lot of [extended] family and we love them.

Robert: People from all walks of life, all cultures, all age groups, everybody cruises Carnival. We cruise Carnival because of the people. It isn’t the destinations for us anymore, it’s the journey — and the biggest part of the journey is the people.

Would you spend another 1000 days at sea?

Nancy: If we live long enough, we will!

The Houchens are currently sailing aboard Carnival Pride in Europe on back-to-back cruises and plan to keep cruising as much as possible throughout their retirement.
