Hurtigruten Expeditions launches more West African and South American expedition cruises

Hurtigruten Expeditions launches even more West African expedition cruises for 2023/24 – including one of the least visited destinations and national parks on the planet. More off-the-beaten-track exploration of South America and more North American National Parks are also among the news.

Hurtigruten Expeditions launches even more West African expedition cruises for 2023/24 – including one of the least visited destinations and national parks on the planet. More off-the-beaten-track exploration of South America and more North American National Parks are also among the news.

Hurtigruten Expeditions – the world’s largest and leading expedition cruise line  has rapidly expanded its global offering of small-ship expedition cruises in recent years, adding destinations such as the Galapagos, West Africa, the Caribbean, and the only year-round expedition cruises directly from Germany and UK to the Norwegian coast.

The 2023/24 season will be the most extensive in the company’s 125 years of exploration. Some of the new highlights includes:

  • Exploration of the remote and rarely visited parts of West Africa including Cape Verde and the Bissagos Island. The itineraries include four countries: Cape Verde, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Senegal, with MS Spitsbergen based out of Dakar, one of Africa’s most bustling cities. Hurtigruten Expeditions is the only cruise company offering West African-based cruises.

  • More small-ship Caribbean and Central American expedition cruises inviting guests to immerse in stunning scenery, pristine beaches, long lost cultures, and small communities – Hurtigruten Expeditions style.

  • North American national parks galore – visiting stunning natural reserves both on the east and west coasts of the United States

  • Even greener exploration on board the recently elected “World’s Most Sustainable Cruise Ship” MS Fridtjof Nansen – and identical sister ship MS Roald Amundsen

  • A brand-new, ten-day expedition cruise from Panama to Barbados.

  • A total of 32 expedition cruise packages where small-ship expedition cruising can be combined with land-based exploration of world renowned destinations such as Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, the Galapagos Islands, and Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio.

“Exploration is not solely about geography; it’s a mindset. We receive clear feedback from guests that they want to experience new ways to explore, and in more places. This is the reason why we continue to launch and expand our offerings to immerse in nature, culture, history, and science across the whole planet,” said Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen.

For the 2023/24 season, two hybrid-powered custom-build expedition ships will let guests explore nature reserves such as the western Redwood National Park and the Olympic Biosphere Reserve and National Park – and the eastern Acadia National Park and the Cape Cod National Seashore.

The twin hybrid ships MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen will offer six unique North American expedition cruises. As on all Hurtigruten Expeditions voyages, the voyages include scientists in the signature onboard Science Centers deepening the guest experience. Guests are also encouraged to partake in Citizen Science projects.

“We offer travel with learning and personal development. Our guests want their journey to have meaning and depth – while they explore unparalleled destinations leaving the lowest possible climate and nature footprint,” said Lassesen.

Bigger expedition teams – even more exploration and activities

XPEDITION EXPERTS: Highly skilled and experienced Expedition Teams accompany guests on all Hurtigruten Expeditions' cruises. Photo: Espen Mills/Hurtigruten Expeditions

All Hurtigruten Expeditions’ cruises feature a large on-board expedition team with experts handpicked for each itinerary. Building on more than 125 years of experience, Hurtigruten Expeditions offers the widest range of experts in the industry.

Leading up to the 2023/24 season, the size of the expedition team on all Hurtigruten Expeditions’ ships will be increased even further. More expedition equipment will also be added to the ships.

For the guests, this will mean a significant improvement, with an even wider range of activities to choose from – such as more kayaking, more small-boat exploration, hiking, lectures, science projects and other activities – and even more experts to indulge in knowledge and create a deeper understanding of some of the most spectacular destinations of the planet.

“In short, great will get even better. Our on-board colleagues, and the way they share their passion, knowledge, and expertise of the areas we explore is the core of the Hurtigruten Expeditions’ experience. Bigger expedition teams mean more of everything – more experts, more knowledge, more activities and more options for our guests,” said Lassesen.

Expedition cruising returns to Antarctica

For the first time in two years adventurous guests are again exploring Antarctica. “We are thrilled to share this long-awaited return with our guests”, said industry leader Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen.

For the first time in two years adventurous guests are again exploring Antarctica. “We are thrilled to share this long-awaited return with our guests”, said industry leader Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen.

As the season’s first guests set foot on pristine white Orne Harbour and Duse Bay – surrounded by snow-capped mountains and penguins curiously welcoming the modern explorers – it was a long-awaited reunion with the White Continent.

“Returning to this truly unique destination is a landmark reminder of its greatness and richness for all of us. And seeing the spark in the eyes of the guests who experience the lush wildlife, the rugged nature, and the interesting historical remains of early day exploration, is simply moving,” said expedition leader Tomasz Zadrozny of MS Roald Amundsen.

"Great news for South American travel industry"

Photo: Oscar Farrera/Hurtigruten Expeditions

Being back in Antarctica is also a milestone for the expedition cruise industry, including Hurtigruten Expeditions – the world's leading and largest expedition cruise line – after an almost two year-long pandemic pause in Antarctica operations.

“It is great news for the South-American travel industry to see the first ships safely, sustainably and responsibly exploring in Antarctic waters again. This activity is highly appreciated and of great value. There are no better ambassadors for this region than guests who have experienced and learned about these areas for themselves,” said Regional Director Ximena Castro of the Chilean National Tourism Service (SERNATUR).

Hybrid homecoming

The battery-hybrid powered MS Roald Amundsen, named after the first man to reach the South Pole, spent 1,5 days crossing the Drake Passage – the famed body of water that separates South America's Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica – before reaching the White Continent.

“This is a long-awaited dream coming true! We have spent the period since our last season in the deep South in preparations to offer even richer, unforgettable experiences at this one-of-a-kind destination. Now it all comes together between icebergs, penguins, seals, whales, birds, and other unique wildlife,” said Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen.

Hurtigruten Expeditions recently revealed a first preview of expeditions for 2023/2024 season including a series of new Antarctica voyages.

Preparing for unique solar eclipse

More than penguins, snow and the vast remoteness attracts visitors to return to Antarctica this December. Guests onboard MS Roald Amundsen are being offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to a front-row experience of the 2021 solar eclipse.

The December 4th solar eclipse is only visible in the Antarctic regions of the planet

“We will position the ship at a prime position outside the South Orkney Islands for the perfect spot to experience this spectacular natural phenomenon – if weather and other conditions permit”, said MS Roald Amundsen Master Remi Eriksen (pictured).

Post-pandemic adventure travel upswing

Photo: Oscar Farrera/Hurtigruten Expeditions

Learning, and understanding more about the areas explored, is key for the expedition experience, Master Eriksen explains. On all Hurtigruten Expeditions expedition cruises, guests are invited to draw on the knowledge and passion of hand-picked, 20+ members on-board Expedition Teams.

For this season, Hurtigruten Expeditions has returned to Antarctica with two ships – both departing from Chile. The battery-hybrid powered MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fram, bring guests to explore the White Continent from Punta Arenas, deep south in the country.

In addition to the South Pole continent and the surrounding islands, Hurtigruten Expeditions also invites guests explore South Georgia and the Falkland Islands.

Adventure travel is on the rise, and not only to Antarctica, according to Hurtigruten Expeditions.

“We experience very strong 2022 and future bookings clearly demonstrating a substantial pent-up demand for adventure travel also to other unparalleled destinations such as West Africa Cape Verde and the Bissagos Island,” said Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen.

MSC CRUISES AND CHANTIERS DE L’ATLANTIQUE CELEBRATE TWO SIGNIFICANT NEWBUILD MILESTONES FOR THE LINE’S NEXT GENERATION OF ENVIRONMENTALLY ADVANCED CRUISE SHIPS

  • Float out of MSC’s first LNG-powered vessel, MSC World Europa, which will operate with significantly reduced emissions

  • Coin ceremony for second LNG-powered vessel, MSC Euribia, one the most environmentally high performing contemporary vessels ever built in France

  • MSC Cruises and Chantiers de l’Atlantique confirmed the installation of a fuel cell pilot plant on board MSC World Europa

Pictured: The MSC World Europa (at left) and the MSC Euribia (at right). For images from the float out of MSC World Europa and Coin Ceremony forMSC Euribia, please visit here.

Saint-Nazaire, France, December 2, 202I – The Cruise Division of MSC Group and Chantiers de l’Atlantique today celebrated two significant newbuild milestones for the construction of the line’s next generation of environmentally advanced vessels. MSC World Europa and MSC Euribia will become the first LNG-powered vessels to join the MSC Cruises fleet next year, representing an investment of approximately USD $3.4 billion in Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) ships with the construction on World Europa II due to commence in early 2023.

These ships play an important role in the Company’s commitment to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. LNG is by far the cleanest marine fuel currently available at scale and it virtually eliminates local air pollutant emissions such as sulphur oxides (99%), nitrogen oxides (85%) and particles (98%). In terms of emissions with a global impact, LNG plays a key role in climate change mitigation and the engines of these two ships have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 25% compared to standard fuels. In addition, with the subsequent availability of Bio and Synthetic forms of LNG, this energy source will provide a pathway toward eventual decarbonized operations.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman, MSC Cruises, said: “Today is another important milestone in our journey towards net zero emissions by 2050 for our marine operations. Following billions of euros of investment, we are announcing significant construction developments in not just one but two of our next generation LNG-powered vessels, bringing us ever closer to our vision of an emissions free cruise industry. As the cleanest fuel currently available at scale for our operations, LNG is at the vanguard of the momentous energy transition we must go through.”

“We have a lot more to do, but I am pleased that despite all that we have faced from the pandemic over the last two years, we have still been able to achieve with our partners at Chantiers de L’Atlantique the launch of these new LNG vessels – the first ever made in France that will also introduce potential new fuel cell technologies to make them even more efficient. We now need to take even bigger steps and we will need the continued support of our suppliers, partners and Governments to achieve this. We all need to work together to achieve our green future.”

Laurent Castaing, General Manager, Chantiers de l’Atlantique, added: “It is indeed a very special moment we are living today. This is not only because these ships are respectively the 15th and the 16th we are building for MSC Cruises, which shows the outstanding quality of the relationship we established between our two companies since the 90’s. This is not only because they will rank among the largest and the finest in the world’s cruise market. But it is also and especially because they represent a giant step towards what the cruise ships of the future will look like. At their delivery, they will have the best carbon footprint in the market, in terms of emissions per passenger and per day.”

It was also revealed today that MSC Cruises and the Chantiers de l’Atlantique confirmed the installation of a fuel cell pilot plant on board MSC World Europa known as Blue Horizon, marking the first time an LNG-powered fuel cell has been used on a cruise ship. The technology will use LNG to convert fuel into electricity at one of the highest efficiencies of any power solution available today, producing electricity and heat on board. The fuel cell technology selected by Chantiers de l'Atlantique (CdA) and MSC Cruises is the SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) developed by Bloom Energy. The SOFC will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) by approximately a further 30 percent compared with a conventional LNG engine, with no emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides or fine particles. It also offers the advantage of being compatible with LNG, as well as several low carbon fuels such as methanol, ammonia and hydrogen. This project will form the building block for future larger installations and the beginning of an even closer collaboration between MSC Cruises and Chantiers de l’Atlantique on Research & Development of fuel cell technology.

The traditional coin ceremony took place as the keel was laid for MSC Cruises’ second LNG-powered ship, MSC Euribia, which will be one of the most environmentally high performing contemporary vessels built in France. Anne Claire Juventin, Responsible for Quality Control from Chantiers de l’Atlantique, and Valentina Mancini, Brand Manager from MSC Cruises, performed the traditional maritime ritual as godmothers representing the ship owner and the shipbuilder when they placed two coins under the keel as the historical sign of blessing and good fortune for the project, and the ship’s operational life at sea.

The float out of MSC World Europa, which will be the first LNG-powered vessel to join the MSC Cruises fleet, took place at the shipyard in Saint-Nazaire where she will now be moved to a wet dock for work to continue on the ship until her delivery in November 2022.

MSC World Europa – a next-generation cruise experience

MSC World Europa is the first in the trailblazing MSC World Class - a brand new class of ships that introduces a completely new cruising platform. Boasting future-proof marine and onboard hospitality technologies, MSC World Europa will redefine the cruise experience with a variety of never-before-seen concepts and creative areas unlike anything at sea today. The ground-breaking design features a Y-shaped aft that leads to the impressive 341-foot-long half open, half covered Europa Promenade with breathtaking ocean views. Brand new balcony cabins overlook the breathtaking promenade, which features a striking architectural centerpiece in the form of The Venom Drop @ The Spiral, an 11-deck-high slide which will be the longest at sea.

The guest experience is elevated to a whole new level with a veritable world of different experiences with distinct districts, each boasting their own mood and experiences, from a tranquil zen district to the lively promenade with entertainment, shops and bars, to a separate family district with ten new kids’ facilities. Featuring 21 bars and lounges and 13 next-level dining venues, the dining on board offers a host of new innovations. These include the Chef’s Garden Kitchen focusing on flavorful microgreens and La Pescaderia, a traditional seafood grill with alfresco seating. Fan favorites such as Butcher’s Cut, Kaito Teppanyaki Grill and Sushi Bar, and Hola! Tacos & Cantina will also return.

MSC World Europa will welcome her first guests from December 2022 and will spend her inaugural season in the Gulf region, providing guests the ultimate winter cruise experience. Guests will be able to enjoy 7-night cruises from Dubai to the nearby modern metropolis of Abu Dhabi, on to Sir Bani Yas Island, Dammam in Saudi Arabia and the breathtaking Al Ahsa oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, then to Doha, the futuristic capital of Qatar, before returning to Dubai with an overnight in the city to discover all the marvels it has to offer.

Departing Dubai on March 25, 2023, MSC World Europa will head to the Mediterranean Sea. In summer 2023, she will offer 7-night cruises calling at the Italian ports of Genoa, Naples and Messina, as well as Valletta in Malta, Barcelona in Spain and Marseille in France.

MSC World Euribia – a symbol of MSC Cruises’ respect for the oceans

MSC Euribia will become one of the most environmentally advanced ships in MSC Cruises’ fleet to date and is named after the ancient goddess Eurybia who harnessed the winds, weather and constellations to master the seas. In order to demonstrate the Company’s commitment to building environmentally advanced ships and to show the importance of respect for the environment, MSC Cruises has launched a global design contest for artists from around the world to create a unique work of art inspired by the sea and its important marine ecosystem. The winning design will transform the hull of MSC Euribia into a giant, floating canvas to communicate the importance of the marine environment that will be featured as a permanent design across the ship’s hull as she sails the world’s oceans.

SILVER NOVA℠: SILVERSEA BEGINS CONSTRUCTION OF FIRST NOVA CLASS SHIP, PUSHING BOUNDARIES IN SUSTAINABLE CRUISING

Silversea Announces Name of Project Evolution, Silver Nova, and Deepens Cruise Line’s Commitment to the Environment

Silversea Announces Name of Project Evolution, Silver Nova, and Deepens Cruise Line’s Commitment to the Environment

(MONACO – December 2, 2021) Ultra-luxury travel brand Silversea Cruises® has announced the name of its first ship, Silver NovaSM, developed as part of its innovative newbuild project known as Project Evolution, as well as the commencement of the ship’s construction at Meyer Werft in Papenburg. Executives from Silversea and Meyer Werft marked the occasion with a traditional steel cutting ceremony on November 18. The revolutionary vessel, set for delivery in summer 2023, will be the first hybrid, luxury cruise ship free of local emissions at port, positioning Silversea at the forefront of sustainable cruising for years to come.

Silver Nova and future Nova class ships are the latest examples of Silversea’s ongoing efforts to offer travelers an ultra-luxurious experience while simultaneously protecting the treasured destinations it visits and the communities it serves.

With its hybrid power sources, Silver Nova is expected to achieve a cruise industry-first – local emission-free operation in port by using fuel cells and batteries. Silver Nova will use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as its main fuel. The new hybrid technology not only helps in port, but will also allow Silver Nova to achieve a 40% overall reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions per double suite when compared to its previous class of ships (the Muse class).

“Our Nova class ships represent a significant investment in unprecedented technological solutions. They support our mission to preserve the planet without compromising on comfort or luxury,” says Roberto Martinoli, President and CEO of Silversea Cruises. “Silver Nova is the manifestation of Silversea and Royal Caribbean Group’s long-term commitment to sustainability.”

"Sustainability is the future of luxury travel and the name Silver Nova is representative of the incredible innovation of Silversea’s luxury," added Barbara Muckermann, Chief Commercial Officer. "Silversea is already a leader in environmentally conscious travel and now, with Silver Nova, we will go even further to meet the expectations of both today’s and tomorrow's luxury traveler."

Aligned with the company’s commitment and progress to carbon-neutral construction, Silver Nova is being built in Papenburg by Meyer Werft, one of the largest and most modern shipyards in the world. Meyer Weft is known for working with customers and suppliers to develop environmentally friendly and energy-efficient technologies that will comply with future regulations.

"We are delighted to begin the construction of this innovative ship and to continue our long partnership with Royal Caribbean Group. This day is a very special one for us, as it is the first time that a Silversea ship is being built at our shipyard," says Bernard Meyer, Managing Director of Meyer Werft.

Sustainable features of Silver Nova and all future Nova class ships include a micro auto gasification system, which reduces onboard waste volume, resulting in lower incineration emissions. In addition, the ship class is also projected to achieve an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) rating of approximately 25% better than applicable International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements. Shore power will allow the ship to shut down its main generators at select ports and plug into the onshore energy supply, thereby cutting onboard local emissions to zero. Overall, the ground-breaking hydrodynamic ship design and optimized innovation technology help lessen the ship’s impact on environment.

Silver Nova will be one of the most spacious cruise ships ever built and will offer passengers an ultra-luxurious experience. This includes a space-to-guest ratio of 75 GRT-per-passenger – the highest in Silversea’s fleet – offering one of the most personalized services at sea with a 1:1.3 crew-to-guest ratio, as well as the line’s butler services for all suites. The ship will have a travel capacity of 728 guests and a gross tonnage of 54,700 tons.

Silver Nova is scheduled for delivery in summer 2023. Members of Silversea’s loyalty program, the Venetian Society, and travel advisors will have pre-sale access starting December 16, 2021. General sales will open on January 6, 2022.

Cunard and Pacific Symphony Announce New Partnership

VALENCIA, Calif., Dec. 1, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Luxury cruise line Cunard and Orange County's acclaimed Pacific Symphony are embarking on a new partnership, with Cunard's exclusive sponsorship of the organization's premier Box Circle Club.

As the official cruise line of the Pacific Symphony, Cunard's support will enhance the organization's mission to engage, inspire and serve Orange County through exceptional music performances, education and community programming. Just as the Pacific Symphony's vision is to lead a classical music renaissance in the community through creativity and innovation, Cunard's credo mirrors those core values by providing an elegant and distinctive ocean travel experience featuring the line's renowned White Star Service, and providing guests unique special event opportunities.

Founded in 1978, Pacific Symphony began as a collaboration between California State University, Fullerton, and North Orange County community leaders led by Marcy Mulville. The Symphony has now been led by Music Director Carl St.Clair for over 30 years and has been the resident orchestra at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall for 15 years. Currently in its 43rd season, the Symphony is the largest orchestra formed in the U.S. in the last 50 years and is recognized as a Tier 1 orchestra making strides on both the national and international scene. In April 2018, Pacific Symphony made its Carnegie Hall debut as one of two orchestras invited to perform during a celebration of composer Philip Glass' 80th Birthday.

Cunard has long supported and been passionate about classical music, featuring musical ensembles each year on flagship Queen Mary 2. Most notably is the much-anticipated, annual performances of Sir Anthony Inglis and the UK's National Symphony Orchestra.

The partnership with Pacific Symphony provides Cunard a rare opportunity for west coast cruise and classical music enthusiasts to learn more about the line's sailings in the region, as Cunard increases the fleet's presence in North America; Queen Elizabeth will be sailing north through Los Angeles en route to Alaska in late May, followed by her second Alaska season commencing in early June 2022.

"We are elated to partner with the Pacific Symphony, a beloved, cultural gem in Orange County," said Jamie Paiko, Vice President, Sales, Cunard North America. "Our guests are passionate about classical music and we hope to have the future opportunity of bringing the Symphony on board a voyage for everyone to enjoy. We are eager to introduce Pacific Symphony and their patrons to Cunard's signature voyages, and are excited to support such an important organization in Southern California."

"Pacific Symphony is delighted to welcome Cunard as the exclusive sponsor of our Box Circle Club, and we are gratified that they have joined us as the Symphony official cruise line. Cunard's guests and Pacific Symphony's audiences share much in common in their love for the very finest in art, culture, and world-class experiences," said John Forsyte, President & CEO, Pacific Symphony.

Cunard and Pacific Symphony are evolving their partnership and look forward to announcing developments in the New Year.
