MSC GROUP’S CRUISE DIVISION AND FINCANTIERI PARTNER FOR CONSTRUCTION OF NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART CRUISE TERMINAL AT PORTMIAMI
New terminal will be capable of hosting as many as three latest-generation ships at the same time, handling up to 36,000 passenger movements per day
New terminal will allow the Company to deploy some of its most environmentally high-performing vessels out of PortMiami
Project is due to be completed by December 2023
Geneva, Switzerland and Trieste, Italy (July 8, 2021) – Today the Cruise Division of MSC Group and Fincantieri announced the signing of a contract with Fincantieri Infrastructure Florida for the construction of a new mega cruise terminal at PortMiami, the cruise industry’s hub in North America and the Caribbean.
The new terminal reflects an investment of approximately EUR 350 million (≈$450 million USD) and will be made up of a multi-level central body to serve as many as three latest generation ships at the same time, with up to 36,000 travelers transiting every day. Designed by the award-winning global architecture firm Arquitectonica, the terminal is due to be completed by December 2023.
The new terminal will be able to accommodate the Company’s largest and most environmentally high-performing cruise ships. These include MSC Cruises’ newest flagship MSC Seashore, which is currently nearing completion at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone and due to begin cruising from Miami this November, as well as the line’s future LNG-powered World Class ships.
In line with PortMiami’s plans to enable shore power connectivity, the Company’s ships deployed there will be ready to plug in to the local power grid at berth.
Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division of MSC Group, said: “For the past 35 years MSC Group has been an important partner for the U.S. economy through our growing role as one of the world’s leading container shipping businesses as well as terminal operators for cargo and passengers alike. In this, Miami has always been a key hub and the new MSC Terminal at PortMiami consolidates our overall presence in this important maritime center.
Thanks to the Italian flair that Fincantieri will undoubtedly contribute to this project just like they do to many of our ships, this new state-of-the-art terminal will become a Miami landmark of style as well as comfort for passengers passing through what’s considered the cruise capital of the world. Moreover, it will serve as a platform to support and sustain the expansion of our Cruise Division across the region and in the Caribbean for years to come. It will also allow us to deploy there some of our most modern and environmentally high-performing vessels, representing together with our other investments in the U.S. our commitment to the local market, our trade partners and guests.”
Giuseppe Bono, Fincantieri CEO, commented: ““Miami is undoubtedly the center of world cruise tourism, as well as being the ideal hub for the entire Caribbean area, and is therefore the perfect showcase to host a work that will be representative of the best of made in Italy.”
In addition to state-of-the-art facilities for passenger services, the new terminal building will include office areas, a multi-level parking for at least 2,400 vehicles and a new road connection.
As per the terms of the project, the Company will construct two new docks measuring 2,461 ft. in total. The Miami-Dade County will also build a third berth.
The project also foresees the construction of the related seashore infrastructure, including water supply stations and four passenger embarkation decks.
Tauck Announces Godmothers for New ms Andorinha Riverboat
Company’s President and Chief Culture Officer to Share Honors When New Douro River Ship is Christened in August
WILTON, CT (July 8, 2021) Two of Tauck’s top executives, each with more than 20 years tenure with the company, will serve as co-godmothers when Tauck’s new ms Andorinha riverboat is christened next month in the small Portuguese village of Barca de Alva. Company President Jennifer Tombaugh and Chief Culture Officer Sharyn Cannon will share the honors when the new ship, designed specifically for cruising along Portugal’s Douro River, officially enters Tauck’s fleet during the first week of August.
“Jennifer and Sharyn are the embodiment of Tauck’s ethos of caring for others, which has been the cornerstone of Tauck’s success for 96 years,” said Tauck CEO Dan Mahar. “Their deep care and concern for our guests, for our employees, and for our travel advisors and supplier-partners guides all that they do and how they do it. I know I speak for the entire Tauck family when I say that the honor is truly ours to have Jennifer and Sharyn serve as the Andorinha’s godmothers.”
Tombaugh joined Tauck in 2001, and today oversees the company’s Worldwide Operations, Brand Management, Reservations, Guest Relations and Sales teams. During her Tauck career she has been responsible for the launch of Tauck Bridges (the company’s family travel brand), Tauck’s groundbreaking partnership with acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns, the redesign of the company’s reservation systems and website, and the formation of Tauck Ventures, focused on new business development. Cannon joined Tauck in 1999 as the Director of the company’s Reservations Sales Center. Today she leads a number of key departments including Human Resources, Tauck Director Management and IMPACT (Tauck’s philanthropic efforts), all with special focus on the engagement of Tauck’s employees and stewardship of Tauck’s unique culture. She also co-leads the company’s Global Response Team (crisis management).
Andorinha
Designed specifically to sail on Portugal’s Douro River (and originally scheduled to be christened in March of last year), the Andorinha is named for a species of small migratory swallow that returns to the same nests in Portugal each spring after wintering in Africa. With travel finally resuming after the Covid-19 pandemic, that symbol of resilience and renewal is especially meaningful for Tombaugh and Cannon.
“After such a long pause in travel and with the disruptions in all of our lives, the launch of the Andorinha and the start of our journeys on the Douro take on a much deeper meaning of restart, renewal and rebirth,” said Tombaugh. Cannon agreed, noting that “in Portuguese culture the andorinha symbolizes love, loyalty and faithfulness, and I can’t think of a greater symbol for these times, for our employees and for our guests.”
THE TAUCK ONBOARD EXPERIENCE: FEWER GUESTS, MORE SERVICE STAFF
Rather than designing the Andorinha to maximize passenger capacity (and revenues), Tauck has again focused its energies on delivering a superior onboard experience to its guests. As with Tauck’s other riverboats, the Andorinha will feature more suites, more spacious public areas, and a less-crowded, more intimate onboard ambiance. The new ship will accommodate just 84 Tauck guests, versus up to 112 passengers – or 33% more people – on other cruise lines’ Douro ships of the same approximate size. Even with fewer guests aboard, the Andorinha will still have more director-level personnel to ensure Tauck guests enjoy the highest levels of care and service. Like other Tauck riverboats, the Andorinha will be staffed by a Tauck Cruise Director and three Tauck Director guides.
Guests sailing on the Andorinha will be accommodated in 42 cabins, including 12 300-square-foot suites on the upper Diamond Deck, and 20 225-square-foot staterooms primarily on the vessel’s Ruby or mid-level deck. The remaining accommodations (six 200-square-foot cabins and four 150-square-foot cabins) will be on the lower or Emerald Deck.
Tauck is offering two Douro River itineraries aboard the Andorinha in 2021; a 12-day journeythat bookends a seven-night Douro cruise with two-night hotel stays in Lisbon and Madrid, and an eight-day “cruise-only” itinerary along the river. “Douro Discovery,” an eight-day Tauck Bridges cruise designed specifically for families, will debut in 2022.

Jewel of the Seas Departs from Limassol, Cyprus for the First Time Ever
MIAMI, July 6, 2021 – Today, Jewel of the Seas embarked on a 2-night preview sailing from Limassol, Cyprus ahead of an inaugural cruise on Saturday, July 10 that will mark the start of the limited summer series of 7-night itineraries to the sun-soaked shores of the Greek Isles. This is the first time Royal Caribbean International calls Cyprus home, offering vacationers and their families adventure and relaxation as they visit a combination of culture-rich cities and idyllic islands, including Limassol, and Athens, Rhodes, Crete, Mykonos and Santorini, Greece.
Jewel will sail with fully vaccinated crew and guests 18 years of age and older, along with children under 18 who are ineligible for the vaccine. As a requirement of the Cypriot government, non-vaccinated vacationers between 12 and 18 must provide negative PCR test results taken within 72 hours of arrival in Cyprus. All guests over the age of 2 must participate in complimentary testing on the day of boarding.
These measures are specific to sailings from Cyprus aboard Jewel this summer, and they will be continuously evaluated as health circumstances evolve. The many layers of health and safety measures, including the vaccination policy and testing requirements, can be viewed here.
“Jewel of the Seas’ first sailing out of Cyprus marks the beginning of an exciting return to cruising in Europe for Royal Caribbean,” said Ben Bouldin, vice president, EMEA, Royal Caribbean International. “Cyprus is a beautiful country with a multitude of must-visit regions, and it is an extremely popular destination among our European guests – we know they are ready and waiting to enjoy a Cyprus and Greek Isles getaway this summer.”

Silversea Leverages Booming Demand for Ultra-Luxury Polar Travel with Ice-Class Conversion of Silver Wind
The renovation of the 274-guest, ultra-luxury liner expands Silversea’s Antarctic expedition options, which will include a solar eclipse voyage in 2021
(Monaco – July 6, 2021) Silversea Cruises, the global leader in ultra-luxury and expedition travel, is set to enhance its global fleet with the conversion of Silver Wind to an ice-class, ultra-luxury expedition ship. The move signals continued confidence in the fast-growing popularity of ultra-luxury expedition travel to the pristine glaciers and wildlife-rich regions of Antarctica.
Silver Wind is presently undergoing refurbishments at the Remontowa shipyard in Gdańsk, Poland, following a major upgrade in 2018. The re-design includes an ice-strengthened hull for cruising in polar waters and state-of-the-art technology upgrades. Adding to her sustainability credentials, Silver Wind will be outfitted with a new advanced waste water treatment plant, new food waste treatment facilities, and new fuel-saving boilers.
Silver Wind will emerge as the cruise line’s fourth expedition vessel in its fleet of nine ultra-luxury ships. Marking her maiden voyage on November 20, 2021, Silver Wind is slated to set sail on a 22-day journey to Antarctica, providing guests with a prime viewing position on the White Continent for a solar eclipse on December 4, 2021.
“We are converting our beloved Silver Wind into one of the most luxurious expedition ships at sea to further expand and diversify our cold-water cruise offering,” says Roberto Martinoli, Silversea’s President and CEO. “With the backing of the Royal Caribbean Group, we are significantly investing in our ultra-luxury fleet to meet the burgeoning guest demand for voyage options in such breath-taking, remote destinations as Antarctica, and we have more exciting enhancements to come.”
NEW EXPEDITION ENHANCEMENTS
Silver Wind will benefit from a set of enhancements that will enable immersive expedition cruising in both Polar Regions, as well as in the world’s most remote tropical waters. Taking guests closer to the action with on-water discovery, the ship will be fitted with a strengthened hull; ice-detector sonars, designed for use on icebreaker vessels; 24 Zodiacs; and 14 kayaks. With a reduced guest capacity of just 274, Silver Wind will deliver one of the most personalised expedition experiences at sea, carrying up to 28 expedition experts who will share their knowledge during onboard lectures, on guided Zodiac tours, and on experiences ashore. Further enhancing the expedition experience for guests, a Photo Studio (formerly the Casino) with state-of-the-art equipment, a Mudroom, and a special water-heating system in the ship’s swimming pool will highlight Silver Wind’s new amenities.
REFRESHED INTERIOR SPACES
Following the ship’s comprehensive refurbishment in 2018, which saw the enhancement of most public spaces, an array of refreshments will enrich guests’ comfort in the ship’s suites and public areas. Silver Wind’s upper suites will be entirely refurbished, with new furniture and carpets, as well as new walk-in showers to complement the bathtubs. Silver Wind’s Vista and Veranda suites will also be updated, including the installation of new walk-in showers. Many of the ship’s public areas will also be refreshed, with re-painted walls and ceilings in La Dame, La Terrazza, the Observation Lounge, the Panorama Lounge, and the Reception area. The Gym & Beauty Salon will be refreshed too.
SOLAR ECLIPSE VOYAGE TO ANTARCTICA
Her maiden voyage as an expedition ship, Silver Wind is scheduled to depart on a 22-day sailing to Antarctica on November 20, 2021, spending her inaugural season exploring the White Continent. Not only will guests marvel at the remarkable landscapes and breathtaking wildlife of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Antarctica, but they will be perfectly placed to experience the solar eclipse on December 4 on what promises to be an unforgettable journey.
