Trio of top chefs brings Swan Hellenic world-class on-board gastronomy

Jörg Lehmann, Andrea Ribaldone and Sang Keun Oh bring internationally-acclaimed gastronomic expertise to iconic cultural expedition cruise leader

Jörg Lehmann, Andrea Ribaldone and Sang Keun Oh bring internationally-acclaimed gastronomic expertise to iconic cultural expedition cruise leader

Nicosia, Cyprus: Today, Thursday 17th June, Swan Hellenic announced that it has appointed Jörg Lehmann as Executive Chef of its first 5-star expedition cruise ship, SH Minerva, due to embark on its maiden cruise this November.

Jörg brings extensive cruise industry experience, having risen through the ranks and to the top of the market at Crystal Cruises, then Silversea and Seabourn, where he became the company’s youngest Executive Chef aged 26. Later moves on land saw him developing the gastronomic offering for a Kempinski Hotels’ luxury beach resort in Zanzibar and then his own hotel and restaurants in Sweden, with clients ranging from Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel to 007 actor Daniel Craig and the cast of the film “The Girl with the Dragon tattoo”.

Accepting an invitation to return to Seabourn as Guest Chef on a prestigious farewell cruise in 2015, Jörg rediscovered his love of creating gastronomic sensations for the discriminating guests on small expedition ships, subsequently working with SeaDream Yacht Club, Noble Caledonia, Hurtigruten and now Swan Hellenic.

As Executive Chef, Jörg is already deeply involved in creating the varied menus for SH Minerva, including creative Italian and Asian fusion dishes in partnership with recently appointed Consultant Chefs Andrea Ribaldone and Sang Keun Oh, working directly with them in Italy and Moscow respectively.

Andrea is an influential Italian chef with an extraordinary array of achievements to his name. These include gaining a Michelin Star for La Fermata, founding the gastronomy consulting company ARCO, being appointed Executive Chef at Eataly Tokyo, renovating Due Buoi in Alessandra and earning it, too, a Michelin Star, then managing Osteria Arborina in the Annunziata hamlet of La Morra and once again gaining a Michelin Star, as well as launching and managing a whole series of highly successful innovative dining concepts and venues.

Providing a different but no less distinguished perspective as Consultant Chef, the fabled Korean innovator Sang Keun Oh brings unrivalled experience of Japanese cuisine, acquired at the renowned Tsuji Culinary Institute, but equally of French cuisine, having risen to become Head Chef at the Franco-Japanese L’Étranger in London, which was awarded two AA Rosettes under his leadership. This led to a series of tremendous successes in Russia as Executive Chef of the Asian menus at the famous Moscow floating restaurants Lastochka and Chaika, followed by his own acclaimed restaurant Hibiki, serving modern Japanese cuisine. Sang Keun Oh is now sharing his unique insights to bring Swan Hellenic a gastronomic offering of exceptional quality, diversity and creativity.

“We’re overjoyed to have built such an extraordinary team of talents,” commented Swan Hellenic, SVP Hotel Operations, Hans Heger “ensuring our guests will not only see what others don’t, but also savour exceptional flavours and textures as they voyage. I have to confess I’ve already sampled some of the dishes being developed and they’re simply out of this world!”

It’s a pleasure to work with such a professional team,” observed Consultant Chef Andrea Ribaldone, “all totally committed to creating a unique gastronomic experience. I’m delighted to play a role in bringing this iconic pioneer a further distinctive facet to its incomparable quality of life on board”.

I’ve been really impressed by the dedication of the Swan Hellenic team,” agreed Consultant Chef Sang Keun Oh. “We’ve been working incredibly well together to create on-board dining that’s every bit as spectacular as the legendary company’s cultural expedition cruises.

It’s a great honour for me to work in such distinguished company, crafting an amazing variety of truly inspired dishes” concluded Executive Chef Jörg Lehmann. “I can’t wait to present our inaugural menus and see the faces of our guests as they dine on board!

AN ICON IS BORN AS ROYAL CARIBBEAN STARTS CONSTRUCTION ON REVOLUTIONARY SHIP

Icon.jpg

Revealed as Icon of the Seas, the Cruise Line’s First LNG-powered Ship will Make Waves in fall 2023

MIAMI, June 16, 2021 – An iconic day for the cruise industry’s next iconic ship took place on Monday, June 14 when Royal Caribbean International marked the start of construction on its first Icon Class ship. To celebrate the milestone, the world’s largest cruise line held a steel-cutting ceremony at Finnish shipyard Meyer Turku, where the revolutionary ship’s name was revealed as Icon of the Seas

In attendance at the ceremony was Richard Fain, chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group; Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International; and Tim Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku. The initial step in the ship’s years-long journey to completion also officially begins Royal Caribbean’s next chapter in building a clean-energy future as the leader in innovative ship design. Debuting in fall 2023, Icon will be the cruise line’s first of three ships to be powered by LNG (liquefied natural gas). LNG and the state-of-the-art ship’s additional environmentally friendly applications, such as shore power connection, will boost energy efficiencies and reduce carbon footprint. More details about Icon’s advanced environmental technologies will be revealed at a future date.

“We made our commitment to making clean power at sea a reality – and soon the norm – when Icon Class was first announced in 2016, and we’re excited to see construction underway on what will truly be a ship unlike any other,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “Our decades of work in ocean conservation, energy efficiency and continuous improvement will be evident all throughout Icon. We look forward to revealing more of the game-changing features our guests and crew have in store as she begins to take shape.”

Royal Caribbean is already known for its decades of work in making strides on energy efficiency and reduced emissions through such technologies as air lubrication, which sends billions of microscopic bubbles along the hull of a ship to reduce friction, and advanced waste heat recovery systems that turn waste heat into extra energy, up to 3 megawatts, to help power the ship’s operations. Use of such technologies, including LNG, will result in further reduced emissions overall, virtually zero sulfur dioxides and particulates, and a significant reduction in the production of nitrogen oxides.

Each successive class of ships is an architectural marvel featuring the latest technology and guest experiences for today’s adventurous traveler. Queen Mary 2 will resume sailing with a Transatlantic Crossing on November 14, 2021 as per her existing schedule, and will now sail on a series of voyages around the Caribbean between January and April 2022, with embarkation options from Southampton, New York and Hamburg before resuming her existing published schedule on April 24, 2022.

Queen Victoria will embark on three new voyages departing from Southampton from April 22, 2022 which includes Western Europe, the Baltics and the Iberian Coast before resuming her existing published schedule on May 20, 2022.

“On July 19 Queen Elizabeth’s crew and I will be welcoming guests on board as at long last we start our return to sailing,” said Simon Palethorpe, president of Cunard. “This will be a momentous day for Cunard as after a long pause we finally get back to doing what we love doing, hosting guests for fantastic vacations. To say we cannot wait would be an understatement!”

“Sadly, the path for a return to sailing across international waters is less clear and we are extremely sorry for the huge disappointment cancellations will cause for all guests who have been affected. Unfortunately, there are simply too many international ports of call affected by the ongoing complexities of COVID-19, which has sadly led to this decision.”

“We’re really excited about the new itineraries mentioned, such as Queen Mary 2’s sailings around the Caribbean, and hopefully these will appeal to those looking for some much needed winter sun and those looking for adventure later this year and in 2022.”

Due to the ongoing complexities of navigating global travel, Cunard has today announced that they will be cancelling the following voyages:

Queen Elizabeth’s sailings from the UK to Australia and her homeport season in Australia from October 18, 2021 up to and including March 9, 2022.

World Voyages on Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria in 2022 are now cancelled.

Queen Victoria’s sailings from September 10, 2021 up to and including April 29, 2022 are now cancelled.

CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE CONFIRMS FIRST SAILING FOR MARDI GRAS; ANNOUNCES MORE SHIPS RETURNING IN AUGUST

MIAMI, June 10, 2021 – Carnival Cruise Line today laid out plans for its next wave of the summer restart of guest operations, including the first cruise for Mardi Gras and the return of additional ships in August.  Highlights of the plan include:

  • Mardi Gras will start operating her seven-day cruises from Port Canaveral on Saturday, July 31, with pre-inaugural sailings to the eastern and western Caribbean.

  • Carnival Magic will return from her dry dock – and with her new hull design – and homeport from Port Canaveral where she will pick up four- and five-day cruises to The Bahamas and Caribbean that were previously scheduled for Carnival Elation, effective Aug. 7 through Oct. 7. Guests already booked on Carnival Elation will be re-accommodated on Carnival Magic, and because she is a larger ship, additional stateroom inventory is being made available on Carnival.com and other sales channels. Carnival Magic will also operate three new six-day cruises and one new eight-day cruise from Port Canaveral between Oct. 11-31.

  • Carnival Sunrise will enter service from Miami, effective Aug. 14, sailing four- and five-day cruises to The Bahamas and Caribbean.

  • Carnival Panorama will enter service from Long Beach on Aug. 21, sailing her seven-day Mexican Riviera cruises.

  • Carnival Vista and Breeze (from Galveston), Carnival Horizon (from Miami) and Carnival Miracle (from Seattle to Alaska) will continue with their cruises through August that are part of the line’s restart plans in July.

  • Given the above plans, Carnival has extended its pause for other ships through Aug. 31, 2021, as follows: Carnival Pride (Baltimore), Carnival Sunshine (Charleston), Carnival Dream (Galveston), Carnival Ecstasy (Jacksonville), Carnival Liberty (Port Canaveral), Carnival Conquest (Miami), Carnival Sensation (Mobile) and Carnival Glory (New Orleans).

  • Guests and travel agents are being advised of the August schedule plans and Carnival will be providing more details directly to them next week on guidelines and protocols. Carnival plans to operate these August sailings with vaccinated guests.

“We are very excited to finally welcome guests on Mardi Gras,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.  “With our desire to preserve summer vacations for our Mardi Gras guests, we are going to find a later date to formally christen her so that we can operate these pre-inaugural sailings just as soon as we can.”

Duffy also noted that Carnival intends to expand its initial restart from Florida,  Texas and Washington to California, with the return of Carnival Panorama from Long Beach in late August.  “We are excited to resume our West Coast operations and intend to sail Carnival Panorama with vaccinated guests starting August 21.  We are working with state and local officials to finalize the necessary plans,” Duffy said.

Carnival will continue to ramp up more ships and homeports in September and beyond, bringing hundreds of crew on board each week to be vaccinated, complete CDC-mandated quarantine and then begin work to prepare for guests and the return to guest operations.

“Our focus remains on the health and safety of our guests, crew and the communities we serve and visit,” said Duffy.  “We are taking a deliberate approach so we can execute with excellence and deliver a fun experience to our guests, who have been tremendously patient and supportive throughout this pause.”
