Swan Hellenic has announced full details of its four 2024 cultural expedition cruises in the heart of the Mediterranean. All will be aboard the luxury boutique ship SH Diana, following on from the 10-night cruise “Mysteries of Carthage and the Moors” (10-20 August 2024), which will see her sailing from Lisbon, Portugal, through the Straits of Gibraltar – known as the Pillars of Hercules to the ancient world – then along Hannibal’s North African coast and on to Palermo, Sicily.

The four Mediterranean cultural expedition cruises are:

“Secrets of Sicily” – 20 to 28 August 2024 – which departs Palermo for an eight-night circumnavigation of the island, calling at Trapani – neighboring the ruins of 7th century BC Selinute, Mazara del Vallo – an extraordinary mix of every culture to leave a trace on Sicily, Porto Empedocle with the UNESCO Heritage site of Agrigento, then the magnificent, fortified city of Valetta in MaltaSH Diana will sail from there to Siracusa – one of the largest and most powerful cities in the ancient world, Giardini Naxos near picturesque Taormina, and finally Lipari, the largest Aeolian Island, before completing this rare circumnavigation cruise to Palermo.

This cruise is one of Swan Hellenic’s Maris Culinary Discovery at Sea Series in partnership with JRE-Jeunes Restaurateurs, the gourmet organisation for chefs under 40 who have already won international acclaim, including Michelin stars to their name. Chef-owner Nikita Sergeev of the acclaimed Michelin-star Restaurant Arcade in Italy will be accompanying this cruise, serving a different signature dish every night of the voyage, leading up to an extraordinary Gala Dinner created to showcase their creativity and skills.

From Magna Graecia to Greece” – 28 August to 5 September 2024 – leaves Palermo for an eight-night exploration of the heart of the Mediterranean, sailing to the volcanic islands of Lipari and Stromboli, then on to Giardini Naxos, and Crotone with its 16th-century castle and Capo Colonna archaeological park. Otranto follows, distinguished by its 15th-century Aragonese Castle, beautiful cathedral and rich Byzantine ruins. Next comes Sarandë,Albania, beloved for its beaches and nightlife, but equally fascinating for the many UNESCO-listed ancient sites nearby. SH Diana will then take her guests on to the charming city of Preveza, Greece, at the mouth of the Gulf of Actium, close to the imperial city of Nikopolis, which Octavian founded in 31 BC to celebrate his victory over Antony and Cleopatra. Itea is the penultimate port of call, just a stone’s throw from ancient Delphi, famed for its oracle, before this voyage concludes in Piraeus, port of Athens.

This cruise is one of Swan Hellenic’s Explore Space at Sea Series in partnership with the SETI Institute and will be hosting renowned Planetary Astronomer Dr. Mark Showalter, who will be accompanying guests throughout the cruise, both aboard and ashore. He will be giving three talks during the voyage: “The New Horizons Mission to Pluto and Beyond: An Insider’s View”, “The Chaotic Worlds of the Outer Solar System” and “The Antikythera Mechanism”.

In addition, this cruise is also one of Swan Hellenic’s Chopra Explore & Restore Series in partnership with the leading integrative health company founded by world-renowned pioneer Dr. Deepak Chopra. As such, it offers the option for one, more or all guests cruising together to transform their vacation into a well-being voyage especially curated to foster self-discovery and cultural immersion. Transcending the traditional boundaries of wellness tourism, Explore & Restore pairs inward journeys with outward exploration, resulting in a deeply enriching, healing experience with impacts that last long after the voyage has concluded.

Colors of the Eastern Mediterranean – 5 to 16 September 2024 –  sails on an 11-night odyssey from Piraeus, calling at Monemvasia, one of Europe’s most well-preserved medieval towns, Adama on the volcanic island of Milos – famed for its early Christian catacombs and ancient theatre, and Rethymnon on Crete, with a history stretching back through the Venetians and Ottomans to the Minoans. Mandraki on the striking island of Nisyros follows, then tiny Symi, with a surprising history for its size, and Rhodes – renowned for its lost Colossus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and UNESCO-listed Old Town, built by the Nights of St John in the 14th century. The inspiring island of Patmos comes next, its religious history linked to the Book of Revelations, followed by Kusadasi on the Turkish mainland, bordering the magnificent remains of the Roman city of Ephesus. Back to island-hopping, SH Diana will call at Chios, birthplace of the poet Homer, and Mytilene, capital of Lesbos, before reaching Canakkale, gateway to the Dardanelles and neighbor of the famed ancient city of Troy, immortalized in Homer’s Iliad. The last full day will be spent cruising the Dardanelles before this exceptional voyage comes to an end in vibrant Istanbul.

“Cultures of the East Mediterranean” – 16 to 24 September 2024 – sees SH Diana depart from Istanbul to pass 8 nights hugging the coasts of Greece and Turkey on her way to Cyprus, pausing to explore the secrets of Kavála, known as Neopolis in ancient times, its later Byzantine citadel now surrounded by the winding alleys of an enchanting Ottoman “old town”. The next ports of call are Thessaloniki – thriving second city of modern Greece, with an imposing presence of glorious monuments from across the ages, Volos – homeland of the mythical Centaur and birthplace of Jason and his Argonauts, Chios of Homeric fame, and Kusadasi with 11th-century BC Ephesus and the amphitheater where St. Paul spoke. Heraklion, capital of Crete, follows – famed for The Palace of Knossos, a major center of Minoan civilization and the mythological home of the labyrinth and its Minotaur, then Rhodes and lastly Limassol – the second-largest city in Cyprus, located between the ancient sites of Amathous and Kourion.

Each of these meticulously-curated itineraries aboard SH Diana offers a unique mix of cultural immersion, unparalleled service and unforgettable occasions. From gourmet dining experiences to expert-led excursions, Swan Hellenic is committed to taking every aspect beyond expectations.

In addition, all four of these exceptional itineraries and the preceding cruise, “Mysteries of Carthage and the Moors” (also a Maris Cruise), can be daisy-chained as desired to create personalized, extended voyages of Mediterranean discovery.

SH Diana is Swan Hellenic’s largest cruise ship, accommodating 192 guests in distinctive comfort and style in 96 staterooms and suites. While sharing the unique design features of her sister ships, she also boasts key enhancements, including on-board Tender boats to take guests ashore in addition to and in greater comfort than the customary expedition Zodiacs. Guests are offered a choice of three dining venues and multiple leisure facilities, including a state-of-the-art gym, spa, panoramic sauna, club room and swimming pool with poolside grill.

Swan Hellenic Unveils its May and June 2024 Celts and Vikings Cruises

Cultural expedition cruise pioneer offers three unique itineraries across the British Isles and Iceland for curious minds to delve deep into the fascinating histories and cultures of the Celts and Vikings, immersed in the extraordinary wild nature in which they lived

19 February 2024

Swan Hellenic is offering voyagers three expert-curated cultural expedition cruises, designed expressly to immerse them in the historical, cultural and wildlife wonders of the British Isles and Iceland. From the mystic romance of ancient Celtic civilizations to the legendary trails of Vikings and the breathtaking landscapes of Iceland, these voyages promise unforgettable exploration and discovery. All three cruises in the series are aboard Swan Hellenic’s purpose-designed boutique ice-class ship SH Vega.

The first is Spirit of the Celts (11 nights from 24 May to 4 June 2024), which sails from Portsmouth, England’s only island city, to Fowey in Cornwall, Tresco in the Scilly Isles, Bantry, Dingle, Galway and Killybegs in Ireland, then Iona, Stornoway, Loch Ewe and Oban in Scotland, followed by Portrush and Rathlin Island in Northern Ireland before finally concluding the odyssey in Dublin, Ireland.

With every destination offering a wealth of experiences, it’s difficult to single out highlights, but the spellbinding Callanish Stones on the west coast of Lewis and Harris, also famed for Harris tweed, are sure to be a treasured memory. Built some 500 years before Stonehenge, in 3,000 BC, they’re one of the two oldest stone circles in the UK. Another standout is the Causeway Coast, its clifftop walks and beaches leading to the UNESCO-listed Giant’s Causeway with its 40,000 basalt formations, deservedly Ireland’s leading tourist attraction.

In the Wake of Celts and Vikings (12 nights from 4 to 16 June 2024) follows on, leaving Dublin for Iona, Portree on the Isle of Skye, then Ullapool, Stromness on Orkney, Lerwick on Shetland, and Tórshavn, port capital of the Faroe Islands, before embarking on a semi-circumnavigation of Iceland, calling at Djupivogur, Grimsey Island, Akureyri, Isafjordur, Vigur Island, Dynjandi waterfall, Látrabjarg cliffs and Reykjavik.

Highlights are again difficult to pick with so many magical places visited, but Orkney’s Skara Brae is a standout as Northern Europe's best preserved Neolithic village, predating Stonehenge and the Giza pyramids. The over one million seabirds on Grimsey also make for awe-inspiring encounters, only matched by the immense landscapes of Akureyri with its spectacular canyon and waterfalls.

The third cruise in this exceptional series is Iceland in Depth (8 nights from 16 to 24 June 2024), which departs Reykjavik for a full circumnavigation of the island, exploring the Dynjandi waterfall, Ísafjördur and the Westfjords region, Vigur Island, the seabird paradise of Grimsey, then Hrisey Island, famed for its wildlife and traditional Icelandic crafts. Next comes Akureyri, “Capital of the North”, with its spectacular surroundings, the art port of Seyðisfjörður and the charming fishing village of Djupivogur, followed by Heimaey, home to the largest puffin colony in the world, after which SH Vega will complete the circle to Reykjavik.

Each of these captivating cultural expedition cruises offers voyagers a special opportunity to unlock the rich secrets of these beautiful wild lands, where the legacies of Celtic and Viking culture intertwine. Moreover, they can be daisy-chained to create an extended in-depth experience. Which is one reason why there is already only limited availability of the middle cruise, In the Wake of Celts and Vikings. Take note!

Swan Hellenic Chief Commercial Officer Patrizia Iantorno comments: “The myths and legends of the Celts and Vikings have long exerted a fascination as strong as that of the otherworldly landscapes and rich wildlife of the regions where they lived. These three cultural expedition cruises have been crafted by our experts to provide an immersive experience of every aspect. We’re extremely proud of the result, knowing the unforgettable moments that will await our guests as they voyage in the sophisticated casual ambience of SH Vega, with its gourmet dining and designer amenities.”

About Swan Hellenic

Swan Hellenic was relaunched in July 2020 to proudly advance the spirit of cultural expedition cruising the company pioneered in the 1950s. Building on its British roots, the new company has a distinctly cosmopolitan culture dedicated to providing guests with global opportunities to see what others don’t.

Swan Hellenic's purpose-built boutique ships feature elegant Scandi-design interiors, extensive outdoor spaces and dedicated expedition facilities. SH Minerva and SH Vega, two 5-star Polar Code PC 5 expedition cruise ships with ice-strengthened hulls, launched in December 2021 and July 2022. Both accommodate 152 guests in 76 spacious suites and staterooms, the majority with large balconies. A slightly larger PC 6 ice-class vessel, SH Diana, accommodating 192 guests in the same distinctive comfort and style in 96 staterooms and suites, was launched in April 2023.

While sharing the unique design features of her sister ships, SH Diana also introduces certain key enhancements, including a dedicated presentation and lecture theatre overlooking the lounge, and on-board Tender boats to take guests ashore in addition to and in greater comfort than the customary expedition Zodiacs. Like her siblings, SH Diana features a state-of-the-art gym, spa, panoramic sauna, club room and swimming pool with poolside grill.

All three ships feature three dining venues – the Swan Restaurant, Club Lounge and Pool Bar & Grill – and are built in full compliance with SOLAS Safe Return to Port requirements. Swan Hellenic’s cultural expedition cruises have always been distinguished by the company, guidance and expert lectures of famous explorers, seasoned expedition guides and leading authorities in their fields. Now, many of the cruises are also enriched by partnerships with unique organisations to bring very different experts on board in the same way, including JRE-Jeunes RestaurateursChopra and the SETI Institute.

Maris Culinary Discovery at Sea brings a different JRE gourmet chef aboard each in a series of exclusive cruises which take guests on a parallel voyage of gastronomic discovery. Chopra Explore & Restore well-being voyages pair inward journeys with outward exploration, resulting in a deeply enriching, healing experience with impacts that last long after the voyage has concluded. While the SETI Explore Space at Sea Series brings a different world-renowned scientist from the SETI Institute aboard each cruise to provide guests with expert insights into the history and latest discoveries in astronomy, astrophysics, astrobiology and planetary science, as well as the quest to find other forms of life within and beyond our solar system.

On many cruises, guests can also participate in Swan Hellenic’s Citizen Science partnerships, contributing valuable data obtained during their expeditions and on board, reporting cloud data with NASA, recording whale sightings with Happywhale, monitoring phytoplankton with the Secchi Disk Study, and Antarctic seabird numbers with Stony Brook University.

Headquartered in Cyprus with offices in London, Dusseldorf, Monaco, Fort Lauderdale (serving the North American market), Hong Kong (serving Greater China, India and South-East Asia), Sydney (serving Australia-New Zealand) and Copenhagen (serving Scandinavia and Iceland), together with a partnership serving Japan, Swan Hellenic supports the travel trade with local specialist partners to provide customers with expert personal service worldwide.

Swan Hellenic’s SH Vega completes highly successful first Antarctic Season with unique cultural expedition cruise to South Africa

The iconic cultural expedition cruise pioneer’s second purpose-designed ice-class ship has reached Cape Town, concluding a spectacular Antarctic season visiting new and rarely-visited areas

Nicosia, Cyprus: Today, Saturday the 25th of March, Swan Hellenic announced that SH Vega’s closing cruise of the 2022-2023 Antarctic season, which departed Ushuaia on the 5th of March, has reached Cape Town, South Africa, from where she is about to embark on a series of unique cultural expedition cruises of the West Coast of Africa. Her extraordinary 20-day voyage crossed the Drake Passage, explored the South Shetland Islands  the Antarctic Peninsula and South Georgia. Finally, she then sailed on to Cape Town via Gough Island and Tristan da Cunha, the most remote island in the world, last visited by a ship in 2019.

SH Vega’s first Antarctic Season has seen it take around 1,200 guests on 11 cruises of singularly spectacular regions and locations, including the Falklands, Portal Point, Port Lockroy, the volcanic Deception Island, The Lemaire Channel and the massive A76-A iceberg that’s as big as the Spanish island of Majorca or the US state of Delaware. Capping it all was the technically demanding Gullet passage, which is rarely visited due to the narrowness of the channel, but rewards passengers with an exceptionally exciting navigation experience. Despite some truly challenging weather, the ship’s crew and expedition team managed to complete more than 120 expeditions in almost 5 months, keeping everyone safe in compliance with the company’s rigorous, industry-leading protocols while making their dreams come true. What’s more, over 400 guests ventured on exclusive kayaking expeditions during the season.

The innovations and successes of these cultural expedition cruises have driven fast-growing interest in the resurgent cruise pioneer, with its Instagram followers ballooning from 5,000 to around 30,000 in just 4 months, taking Swan Hellenic’s coverage to 156,000, and profile visits to 160,000.

SH Vega’s Antarctic season saw guests discover several new and never-before-visited locations south of the Lemaire Channel. Unforgettable moments on the Peninsula itself included a 2-hour Orca encounter at Useful Island, in which a group of curious Orca lingered and played around the ship, plus a long hike from Whalers Bay up to a stunning viewpoint, completed by over half the guests. One of the cruises was also lucky enough to stop in the middle of a group of over 100 playful humpback whales.

All the cultural expedition cruises saw guests mixing with specialist lecturers and seasoned expedition guides able to offer eye-popping insights into the geography, wildlife and cultures of the places and areas explored. Many guests also participated in leading citizen science programmes, contributing valuable data obtained during their expeditions and on board.

Swan Hellenic CEO Andrea Zito commented: “We're extremely proud of our guests’ wholehearted appreciation of SH Vega’s first Antarctic cultural expedition cruises. Even in some truly severe weather conditions, including the notoriously challenging Drake Passage, the exceptional seakeeping characteristics of the ship and expertise of the crew meant the comfort of our guests was never compromised and we could take them safely on nearly every planned expedition to see what others don’t, experiencing an average of two a day. Now we look forward to taking our guests to discover unique sites along the West African Coast for the first time in our history. This is the beginning of an exciting new era for adventurers with curious minds.”

Having visited Germany’s Heligoland archipelago, SH Diana will call at Mandal, the southernmost town in Norway, and start making her way up almost the entire Norwegian coast. Benefiting from expert insights throughout, her guests will explore its longest, deepest, and most dramatic fjords, remote lakes, historic stave churches and charismatic fishing ports on their way to Tromso, Gateway to the Arctic.

Dr Terje Leiren will be accompanying the maiden cultural expedition cruise throughout, sharing his expert knowledge, insights and company with the guests on board. Terje Leiren is Professor Emeritus of Scandinavian Studies and History at the University of Washington, Seattle, and was the University’s first holder of the Sverre Arestad Endowed Chair in Norwegian Studies (2007-2017). Terje gained his Ph.D. in history at the University of North Texas and taught at the University of Oslo before joining the University of Washington in 1977. He served as Co-General Editor of the University of Washington Press book series, “New Directions in Scandinavian Studies”, and is the author of four books and over 40 academic articles on Scandinavian history. He has also contributed to several television documentary programmes broadcast on PBS and the History Channel on topics ranging from the Vikings to World War II.

Having completed her Arctic Season of 7 cultural expedition cruises, SH Diana will make her way back down the western seaboard to the Mediterranean, marking Swan Hellenic’s historic return to the region for which the concept of cultural expedition cruising was originally created. Then she will go further, taking it worldwide as she continues through the Suez Canal to the Paradise Islands, Madagascar and Southern Africa on her way to Antarctica.

SH Diana is the third and largest in a series of three elegant, high ice-class, cultural expedition cruise vessels made for authentic discovery experiences worldwide, with a strong bias for extreme latitude areas. SH Diana features a 4.6-megawatt diesel-electric propulsion system with selective catalytic reduction and a PC6 ice-strengthened hull with extra-large stabilisers for exceptional passenger comfort. At 125 m, the 12,100-ton vessel has been specially designed to explore the most inspiring and inaccessible places on the planet.

SH Diana, like her sister ships SH Minerva and SH Vega, has been designed to meet the latest environmental regulations and is completely self-sufficient for up to 40 days or 8,000 nautical miles. Preparations have been made to implement zero-emission battery technology which would also make it possible to operate silently in port, marine reserves, and other sensitive natural areas. The vessels are equipped with exhaust gas cleaning, advanced wastewater treatment systems and the waste storage facilities required for operating in sensitive polar areas.

Providing spacious 5-star accommodation for 192 guests in 96 spacious staterooms and suites, the vast majority with large balconies, SH Diana is operated by an onboard team of 141 to provide the highest levels of personal service.

Distinguished by the same elegant interior design as her acclaimed sister ships, with open-plan interiors, unobstructed sea views and extensive deck areas, there are nevertheless certain key differences, salient among them a dedicated presentation and lecture theatre overlooking the lounge and on-board tender boats to take guests ashore in addition to the customary expedition zodiacs. Like her siblings, SH Diana will feature a state-of-the-art gym, spa, panoramic sauna, superbly equipped restaurant and cellar, club room and swimming pool with poolside grill.

Swan Hellenic CEO Andrea Zito commented: “We're truly honoured to have Valerie as Godmother to this very special new ship, considering her iconic status in the US travel industry and the importance of the US market for Swan Hellenic. SH Diana proudly takes us back to where our story began, while also opening a new chapter that takes cultural expedition cruising worldwide in exceptional comfort and style.”

Swan Hellenic unveils 2023 season of cultural expedition cruises across 7 continents, with all three new ships in its purpose-designed fleet exploring worldwide

As the iconic company’s second ship, SH Vega, sails on its inaugural arctic cruise, the cultural expedition cruise pioneer reveals it’s set to return to its roots with SH Diana, its third and largest vessel, exploring sites of antiquity across the Mediterranean from 2023

Nicosia, Cyprus: Today, Monday the 25th of July 2022, Swan Hellenic released full details of its 2022-2023 cultural expedition cruises, offering an extraordinary choice worldwide as its fleet grows to two and then three purpose-built, ultramodern ice-class expedition cruise ships. Exploring across seven continents, the adventurous and curious-minded can now access unique experiences previously out of reach. What’s more, Swan Hellenic is celebrating the arrival of its full fleet on the waves with Early Swan Savings of 30% off its brochure prices for all bookings made between now and the end of September 2022.*

As the 2023 season unfolds, SH Minerva will be centred on the Pacific, SH Vega on the Atlantic and West Africa, and SH Diana on the Mediterranean, Red Sea and East Africa. Swan Hellenic has provided an interactive world map to portray and assist exploration of this unique world coverage.

SH Vega, the twin sister ship of SH Minerva, which recently sailed from Tromsø, Norway, for a season of maiden cruises exploring the magic of the Arctic, will be making her way in a full circle around the Atlantic, coasting the Americas to cruise Antarctica from November until March 2023, when she sails up the West Coast of Africa to the Canary Islands and Western Europe for her Arctic season.

Exceptional highlights include her “touching the islands” crossing from Ushuaia to Cape Town via Tristan da Cunha, the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world. Then there’s the astonishing, timeless world of the Conkouati Reserve in the Republic of the Congo, home to forest elephants, lowland gorillas, buffalo, leopards, chimpanzees, red river hogs, humpback dolphins and leatherback turtles, the largest living turtle species in the world. Or how about the South Loango National Park in Gabon? Known as “Africa’s Last Eden”, it’s a paradise of savanna, pristine beach, forest, and mangroves where you can see elephants, buffalos, hippos, gorillas and leopards make their way out onto the white sand beaches while humpback whales and orca swim by.

Equally noteworthy are the Bissagos Islands in Guinea-Bissau, another exploration opportunity unique to Swan Hellenic, with a fascinating indigenous culture featuring strong matriarchal characteristics and a history of fierce and successful resistance to early colonisation.

Swan Hellenic’s third and largest next-generation ship, SH Diana, will see the pioneering company return to its roots, sailing the length and breadth of the Mediterranean, but then also voyaging from the Red Sea to East Africa and beyond.

Standouts here will naturally be the many historic sites of culture and religion across the Mediterranean - including the lesser-known ancient Roman centres of North Africa - all explored with unusual insight thanks to the talks and company of international experts throughout each cruise. But many curious minds will be no less irresistibly attracted by the coral atoll of Aldabra in the outer Seychelles, home to one of the very largest tortoises in the world and the last surviving flightless bird in the Indian Ocean region, the white-throated rail. Then there’s the typically Swan Hellenic opportunity to discover another Zanzibar, immersed in the comparative tranquillity of the small town of Lamu, steeped in Arabic tradition and living testimony to a fascinatingly different history of colonisation.

SH Minerva will return to Antarctica for a full season before embarking on an exceptional semi-circumnavigation of the globe from Ushuaia to Dunedin, New Zealand, exploring the vast expanses of the White Continent and islands of the South Pacific. Highlights of her Pacific season include expeditions in Bali and Komodo with their vibrant traditions and extraordinary wildlife, as well as to explore the richly rewarding lesser-known regions of Papua New Guinea.

Australia’s the Kimberley will be a massive draw. One of the continent’s remotest, most unspoilt and sparsely populated regions, it was in fact among the first to be settled by humans (around 65,000 years ago). Here, they developed a complex culture with yam agriculture, striking art and some of the earliest boomerangs. Swan Hellenic is offering a choice of four separate cruises to explore the Kimberley's extraordinary landscapes, fascinating wildlife and unique Wandjina Aboriginal art, visiting unforgettable locations that are inaccessible by road. Think cliff and cave art, Horizontal Falls, humpback whales, mangroves and sea crocodiles.

Indonesia’ s Raja Ampat archipelago is sure to prove another irresistible attraction. Straddling the Equator at the heart of the Coral Triangle, it hosts the richest marine biodiversity on earth. But then, Swan Hellenic has also ensured the alure of Japan is stronger than ever. Voyaging where others can’t, SH Minerva is not only taking guests to explore its justly famous and diverse cities, but also enabling them to discover magical remote landscapes and fisher ports that have retained the vigour of their traditional lifestyles for hundreds of years.

With such an extensive choice across all 7 continents worldwide, the adventurous-minded are sure to be captivated by more than one Swan Hellenic cultural expedition cruise. Every one of them is available to explore now on an interactive world map and the Swan Hellenic website, with the company’s generous 30% Early Swan Savings immediately available.
