THE CRUISE DIVISION OF MSC GROUP EXPANDS ITS SHORE POWER PLAN

  • At least 15 new ports earmarked for Cruise Division’s ships to receive shoreside electricity between 2024 and 2026, boosting current commitment

  • MSC cruise ships to utilize shore power facilities at more ports as soon as they become available

Geneva, Switzerland – June 14, 2023 – The Cruise Division of MSC Group unveiled details today surrounding the next phase of its shore power plan. Ships will be able to plug into shoreside electricity grids in at least 15 new ports between 2024 and 2026, furthering progress toward decarbonization and reducing emissions from the company’s fleet of ships while berthed.

The new 2024-2026 shore power plan includes Miami, along with Barcelona and Valencia, Spain; Stavanger and Norfjordied, Norway; Copenhagen, Denmark; Marseille, France; Rotterdam, the Netherlands; Valletta, Malta; Stockholm, Sweden; and at least five Italian ports.

The Company intends for all ships belonging to MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys to fully utilize shore power facilities at all other ports they visit once available.

Using shore power removes the need to keep a ship’s engine running and drastically reduces in-port emissions from the vessel.

MSC Cruises’ ships have successfully used shore power at the ports of Southampton, UK and Kristiansand, Norway since February 2023. Later this summer, the company will test the facilities at the Norwegian port of Haugesund. Other European trials are planned this year at Bergen and Alesund in Norway and Warnemunde in Germany.

MSC Cruises will also use shore power in the German ports of Hamburg this winter and Kiel during the summer of 2024.

MSC Cruises signed a memorandum of understanding with Cruise Baltic last year for shore power in the Baltic Sea area. Cruise Baltic has 32 ports and destinations in its region that are committed to increasing the number of shore power facilities available.

Shore power capability has been fitted on all of MSC Cruises’ new ships since 2017. Together with retrofits completed on other vessels, 67 percent of MSC Cruises’ total capacity is equipped with the technology. More ships will be retrofitted as the ports on their respective itineraries make shore power available.

All of Explora Journeys’ ships will include shore power capabilities. EXPLORA I, the first ship in the new brand’s fleet, will enter service on July 17.

Linden Coppell, VP Sustainability & ESG, MSC Cruises, said: “Shore power is an important factor on our journey toward net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) operations. All of our newbuilds since 2017 are equipped with the ability to plug into local power grids and we are rolling out retrofits on the other vessels in our fleet. Our shore power plan actively demonstrates our ambition and that we are fully committed to reduce emissions from our ships, including while in port. We have invested heavily in hybrid exhaust gas cleaning systems to substantially reduce local air quality emissions and we now need more ports across Europe and beyond to introduce shore power as quickly as possible. By making major reductions to emissions in ports, we are fulfilling our responsibility to the ports and coastal communities that our ships visit and serve. Together with the use of LNG fuel, improving energy efficiency, utilizing innovative wastewater treatment and waste recycling, we are making positive strides in playing our part to address climate change and protect ocean biodiversity.”

MSC Cruises’ latest flagship, MSC Euribia, features the most energy-efficient cruise ship design ever and performed an industry-first earlier this month when she sailed from France to Denmark and demonstrated the potential to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions on a cruise through the use of renewable bio-LNG.

MIAMI’S NEXT NEW MEGASHIP—CELEBRATES KEY CONSTRUCTION MILESTONE WITH TRADITIONAL COIN CEREMONY EVENT

  • MSC Cruises celebrates MSC World America Coin Ceremony at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard alongside the Delivery Ceremony of MSC Euribia

  • Milestones for two newest ships exemplify MSC Cruises’ continued expansion as world’s third-largest and fastest growing cruise line

  • Both ships feature latest environmental enhancements as part of line’s continued commitment to sustainability

Saint Nazaire, France – May 31, 2023 – MSC Cruises, the world’s third-largest and fastest growing cruise line, celebrated a key milestone today in its strategic U.S. expansion and commitment to sustainability with the Coin Ceremony for MSC World America. The event took place alongside the delivery of MSC Euribia at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in France and marked a key phase of construction of MSC World America, the brand’s second ship in its innovative World Class and the first ship specifically designed for the U.S. cruise market powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG).

The time-honored maritime ceremony saw commemorative coins placed within the keel of MSC World America by two godmothers, MSC Cruises’ Silvia Turbia and Chantiers de l’Atlantique’s Séverine Blandin, as a sign of blessing and good fortune. When she begins sailing from MSC Cruises’ new, state-of-the-art terminal at PortMiami in April 2025, MSC World America will be the brand’s largest ship in North America.

Rubén A. Rodríguez, President, MSC Cruises USA, said: “Our commitment to bringing our largest, most innovative and environmentally advanced ships to the North American market is stronger than ever, and all of us at MSC Cruises are looking forward to welcoming guests on board MSC World America. The ship’s long list of new spaces and experiences will set a new standard for Caribbean cruising when she arrives in the U.S. in 2025. All of MSC World America’s itineraries include Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, our beautiful island destination that highlights the natural beauty of The Bahamas and our focus on marine conservation. She will join our growing U.S. fleet amid our ongoing homeport expansion, which saw the recent addition of Port Canaveral and New York City with plans for Galveston on the horizon. Together, these initiatives will allow our guests to experience MSC Cruises’ unique international flavor on more ships in more places, and we’re proud to have MSC World America leading the way.”

MSC World America will build on the success of MSC World Europa and become the second World Class ship with key innovations tailored to the North American market, including The Harbor—a brand new outdoor destination that combines a water park, interactive water features, new thrills, and comfortable areas to relax with delicious food and cool beverages for the whole family to enjoy.

Guests will discover a new world of cruising with exciting new restaurants and bars, along with more than 420,000 square feet of public space that combines MSC Cruises’ glamorous European design with American comfort. Sailing exclusively to the Caribbean on 7-night itineraries during her inaugural season—with stops at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve—MSC World America will further solidify MSC Cruises as an industry leader in the U.S., offering the most modern cruise experience with cutting-edge environmental technology.

Henri Doyer, Chantier de l’Atlantique MSC Program Director, commented: “This 19th ship—the second of the World Class series—is the result of a long partnership between MSC Cruises and Chantiers de l’Atlantique. I am thrilled to announce that MSC World Europa, MSC Euribia, and MSC World America are the 3 most energy efficient, most environment-friendly ships of the cruise industry.”

In addition to commemorating the Coin Ceremony for MSC World America, the cruise line also celebrated the delivery of MSC Euribia, which is “built for the future” and is the most energy-efficient cruise ship design ever. The vessel is the second ship in MSC Cruises’ fleet to be powered by LNG, the cleanest and most efficient fuel currently available commercially at scale. She will feature additional state-of-the-art environmental technologies, including advanced onboard wastewater treatment systems, waste management handling, energy efficiency measures as well innovative underwater radiated noise management systems to reduce the potential impact on the marine environment.

In an industry first, following the Delivery Ceremony, MSC Euribia will complete a net zero greenhouse gas emissions voyage. The ship will sail to Copenhagen, Denmark for the ship’s Naming Ceremony on June 8 utilizing a bio-LNG using a mass-balance system and other efficiency measures to demonstrate that net zero cruising is possible today.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division of MSC Group, said: “With the delivery of MSC Euribia, we have taken yet another huge step towards our net zero GHG emissions goal. Alongside her many best-in-class environmental innovations, MSC Euribia features a truly groundbreaking energy efficient design that will deliver huge reduction in GHG emissions throughout her lifetime. Often the focus of decarbonization is solely on supply side measures, and although they are an important part of the energy transition, we must not forget the essential role that energy efficiency will play in reducing energy demand today. The cleanest energy is the energy that we don’t use and MSC Euribia has been constructed with this principle at its heart. This is why she marks with her coming into service such an important milestone toward our goal of achieving net zero CGH marine operations by 2050.”

During her inaugural season, she will offer incredible 7-night itineraries sailing to the Norwegian Fjords with weekly departures from Kiel, Germany and Copenhagen, Denmark.

The MSC Foundation is partnering with world-renowned explorer Mike Horn’s Foundation to support innovative youth-led solutions to the environmental challenges connected with achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Monaco – April 24, 2023 - The MSC Foundation has announced a new partnership that sees it joining forces with the Horn Foundation to support its Pangaea X Program, conceived to help young people develop impactful projects that contribute to achieving certain key UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Salient amongst these are SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 14 - Life Below Water, and SDG 15 - Life On Land.

The recently launched second cycle of the Pangaea X intensive training and coaching program will equip young participants with the essential tools, knowledge and resources to analyze, assess and design their own environmental driven projects. The program will be delivered through an online platform, face-to-face workshops, mentorships and networking events with the aim of encouraging young individuals to become agents of social change in their communities.

Addressing a broad spectrum of environmental threats, including natural resource depletion, biodiversity loss and climate change, Pangaea X aims to fill a gap in current environmental efforts by fostering innovation and collaboration between young people, experts and stakeholders.

The program targets environmentally passionate young individuals eager to make a positive impact on their communities and the planet, aiming to attract approximately 1,000 participants to its online workshops every year, while making a more significant impact on the 10 teams selected to contribute directly to addressing the above-mentioned SDGs.

The second Pangaea X program was officially launched on Friday April 21 and is open to all people ages 16 to 29 living in Switzerland and the EU. The conditions of participation are available on the association’s official website www.pangaeax.org

Announcing the partnership, Mike Horn commented: “Over 10 years ago, I launched my first educational program for the conservation of our planet. Today, young people are much more concerned than they used to be, and I want to offer them the resources to take effective action. Pangaea X has proven a catalyst for change, and I am eager to see the innovative solutions and ideas that the next generation will bring to the table. I am therefore very grateful for the MSC Foundation’s support, which has helped make this year’s program possible.

Pierfrancesco VagoChair of the MSC Foundation Executive Committee and Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division of MSC Group, commented: “As a family-owned Group, we know the importance of supporting youth to achieve their full potential. So, we are delighted to partner with the Horn Foundation to nurture sustainability leaders capable of inspiring and advocating for the transformations needed to secure a strong and resilient future. Mike Horn has for years been such a leader and Pangaea X will offer the right platform for our next generations to build solid practical solutions.

MSC Foundation Executive Director Daniela Picco added: “Restoring the health of our blue planet is a priority of the MSC Foundation and education plays a key role in our efforts. We are therefore honored to contribute to the Pangaea X program as main sponsors, convinced of its strong immediate value and real potential for sustained global impact, equipping young individuals with the tools and resources to drive positive change in pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Explora Journeys reveals further details of its culinary offering

Distinctive signature dishes that blend visual artistry with sensory excitement are unveiled for each of EXPLORA I’s five all-inclusive restaurants.

Geneva, 9th January 2023Explora Journeys is pleased to present additional information on five of its outstanding six onboard restaurants on EXPLORA I, the first of six ships, that will set sail on 17th July 2023 from Southampton in the UK. Among the ship’s 18 food and beverage venues, these five restaurants offer guests superb all-inclusive menus that include unique signature dishes influenced by a variety of international cuisines.

The visual excitement and sheer variety of luxury dining experiences at Explora Journeys’ restaurants come thanks to the leadership of Franck Garanger and his extraordinarily talented team. Restaurant kitchens of international stature are all about precision and technique; but equally important is an understanding of produce – perfectly fresh, sustainable and locally sourced, with components such as bakery and pasta made from scratch onboard. The culinary team aims to maintain a delicate balance of creativity and restraint, an approach that allows beautiful ingredients to shine, taking guests on a journey of discovery via flavours drawn from cuisines around the world.

Explora Journeys’ sommeliers have also gone the extra mile to source boutique labels offering unusual, sometimes very rare, wines of unexpected provenance. A specially curated mixology programme includes the signature Ocean State of Mind cocktail, as well as beverages uniquely designed to accompany specific regional menus. Alongside this offering is a special focus on interesting, alcohol-free beverages.

This is the level of focus invested in providing consistently exceptional dining experiences at all Explora Journeys’ venues, including the five restaurants under the spotlight here:

World-leading refined dining

Sakura is inspired by the ancient tea rooms of Kyoto (the name means ‘cherry blossom’). Its chefs follow traditional Japanese techniques, using meticulously sourced ingredients to create an authentic pan-Asian experience. Menus embrace not just Japanese, but Thai, Vietnamese and Malaysian cuisines, too, with a specialist sommelier on hand to advise on sake, shōchūs and other Asian-influenced drinks.

Signature dishes

Wakame salad, smoked Madagascan pepper, and Wagyu beef tataki

Japan’s famously luxurious Grade 5 Wagyu beef is never cooked or grilled – it’s delicately torched, an authentic cooking technique that sears the meat at an extremely high heat, preserving its astonishing melt-in-the-mouth succulence. The Madagascan pepper is an exceptional variety that grows wild on tall lianas in the heart of Madagascar’s rainforests. Intensely aromatic and exotically spicy, it imparts sweet, very fragrant, rustic hints to the dish that linger long on the palate. Wakame is a highly nutritious seaweed that is associated with a range of health benefits, but it also gives this salad an irresistible umami flavour with a hint of sweetness.

Kale salad

In the expert hands of Explora Journeys’ chefs, the humble kale salad is ingeniously transformed into culinary art. This superfood salad, packed with health-boosting vitamins and minerals, is not simply dressed, but cured with top-class sesame dressing, which produces a mellow, rounded flavour. An ingenious fusion of clean living with the flavours of Asia, it’s an example of the culinary team’s creative skill in elevating a humble ingredient to fine-dining greatness.

Kaffir lime pavlova, mango, passion fruit brunoise, mango sorbet

This East-meets-West interpretation of pavlova typifies the passion, creative expertise and multicultural diversity of the talented pastry team. The zest and leaves of the tropical kaffir lime are prized for the complex floral aroma they bring to Thai and Vietnamese dishes. In this delicious Asian twist on a classic dessert, kaffir lime gives the meringue base an intriguing kick, which is then topped with finely diced mango and passionfruit and served with a refreshing mango sorbet.

Marble & Co. Grill is cool and contemporary, with soft lighting and relaxed, attentive service – a mellow and welcoming place to dine that redefines the European steakhouse concept. The aim is simply to provide exceptional cuts of sumptuous, sustainable meats, rigorously sourced for their intense flavour and provenance. There’s an in-house Dry Ager, as well as a cellar stocked with fine wines.

Signature dishes

Grilled prime rib, aged for 30 days, cherry tomatoes, Hollandaise Sauce

Sourced from a top-quality producer found only in the Deux-Sévres region of the lush Loire Valley, the Jersiaise breed is world-famous for its sensational flavour and intense marbling. As such, it is one of the most sought-after cuts for prime rib, the chefs’ choice for creating the finest version of this steakhouse classic. For optimum enjoyment, it is topped very simply with cherry tomatoes and a velvety hollandaise sauce.

Crushed fingerling potatoes, Le Beurre Bordier butter from Normandy, Calvisius Oscietra caviar, crème fraiche, chives

Like many creations whose success depends on simplicity combined with the finest ingredients, this dish is breath-taking. Take heirloom fingerling potatoes, crush them together with France’s renowned Bordier butter, and top with Calvisius Oscietra caviar. This premium caviar is sustainably produced in Italy, where there’s a constant supply of pristine spring water, giving it its low-salt flavour and elevating the quality to best in class.

Med Yacht Club recalls sophisticated Mediterranean beachside restaurants offering regional ocean-inspired dishes, a convivial place for guests to enjoy with friends and family. The tastes and textures of Italy, Spain, Greece, France and North Africa are captured in sharing plates that include plant-based ingredients, accompanied cocktails and wines from the vineyards of the Mediterranean.

Signature dishes

Grilled octopus, San Marzano tomato sauce, Taggiasca olives, green beans, parsley

Sharp, sundried Taggiasca olives complement sweet San Marzano tomatoes, creating a perfectly balanced bed for expertly grilled octopus. The dish is a tribute to the importance of province when sourcing the finest ingredients – a minimum requirement of Explora Journeys’ chefs.

Sweet caprese with cherry tomatoes, strawberries, burrata, pesto

This surprising, creative twist on the Italian classic caprese is a sweet interpretation that calls for a delightful base of cherry tomatoes and strawberries topped with burrata made from an emulsified burrata cream. Another layer of tomatoes and strawberries is added, and the dish is finished with a drizzle of pesto based on Sicilian Bronte pistachios.

Emporium Marketplace is all airy marble minimalism where the food is king. Cooking stations serve destination-inspired dishes, with sushi, seafood and exquisite meats presented alongside pasta cooked to order and freshly baked pizza. Guests can enjoy charcuterie and fromagerie, and bread and pastries delivered straight from oven to table. Fresh juices, smoothies and acai bowls are served at breakfast.

Signature dishes

Handmade tortelloni, ricotta cheese, spinach, tomato-sage butter

It’s often the simplest dishes that take great skill – this classic is no exception. Tortelloni are ring-shaped, filled pasta ‘pockets’ that originate in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. Made onboard from scratch every day in the authentic Italian way, it’s a process best described as art-meets-science. Carefully sourced flour is used to make dough that has the correct degree of elasticity; this is essential to giving the tortelloni their mouth-watering light and silky texture before being filled with ricotta and spinach, then gently coated in tomato-sage butter.

Plant-based chia yoghurt

Freshly made from cashew milk every day, this calcium-rich chia yoghurt is a fusion of delicious creamy flavours. This sublime start to the day isn’t just flavoursome, it also offers abundant fibre, protein and omega-3 fatty acids – a delicious way for guests to add probiotics to their daily diet.

Fil Rouge offers exquisite, French-inspired international cuisine in an intimate ambiance where guests can linger longer to truly appreciate the level of gastronomic creativity. The décor features intricate hexagon shapes contrasting with clean white walls, a tribute to timeless elegance in its purest form.

Signature dish

Tuna tataki, crispy tomato-olive tart, vegetables, vanilla white pepper

Explora Journeys’ chefs choose bluefin tuna for their tataki. This Japanese dish involves searing the tuna at a scorching temperature before rapidly cooling it, leaving the centre rare – only the finest quality will do for this time-honoured technique. Caught in the sea close to Cartagena Bay on the Mediterranean coast in south-eastern Iberia, it’s among the best-grade tuna to be found anywhere in the world.

A world-leading international culinary team

None of these superb restaurants would exist without a world-class professional culinary team behind them. Balancing contemporary techniques and creativity with a deep respect for regional culinary history, Explora Journeys’ chefs have one aim: to enhance the memories that guests take with them long after their journey has ended.

Franck Garanger, Explora Journeys’ Head of Culinary, is greatly respected for his exacting gastronomic standards. He has raised the bar for the industry, moving it forward at a pace that promises to transform fine dining in general, but particularly at sea. Personally responsible for sourcing and hand-selecting the finest ingredients from all over the planet, he and his team combine them to create a magical palette of flavours that reflect the regional cuisines along each journey. He is assisted by a team that’s at the top of its game:

Alban Gjoka, Senior Lead Culinary Operations helps to conceptualise exciting menus and source top-quality ingredients.  Jérôme Toumelin, Corporate Executive Chef’s earned his expertise worldwide, including six years as Executive Chef at Market by Jean-Georges in Paris. Christophe Sapy, Corporate Executive Pastry Chef, has a formidable reputation for turning desserts into works of art and Frederic Godineau, Senior Executive Chef, comes to EXPLORA I with 19 years of experience in hospitality.

The vast experience, artistic flair and culinary sophistication that these experts bring to Explora Journeys kitchens ensures that guests will enjoy dining that is simply exceptional.
