Alex McNeil Joins Hurtigruten Expeditions
The world’s largest and leading expedition cruise line has onboarded expedition expert Alex McNeil to develop Hurtigruten Expeditions’ next generation of expedition cruises – with even more depth and destination partnerships at the core of the experience.
A pioneer in the expedition industry since 2007, McNeil (CAN) has completed over 100 expeditions, including reaching the Geographic North Pole on 14 separate occasions. He will assume the role as SVP Expeditions Product and Guest Experience this February.
“Alex will play a significant role in developing the future of our expeditions as we continue to create new and exciting adventures for our guests. His extensive field experience combined with understanding of how to offer the most sustainable and inspiring expedition cruises, makes me confident that he will help us re-design the future of adventure travel,” said Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen.

New generation of exploration
In his more than 15-year expedition career, McNeil has sailed on more than a dozen different expedition vessels and completed trips by land and aircraft. His creative and collaborative approach to product development has led to the creation of industry-first itineraries, immersive shore excursion experiences, and the first expedition cruise products developed in full partnership with indigenous communities.
“I am excited to be a part of the Hurtigruten Expeditions team as we identify global opportunities to develop an entirely new range of sustainable, guest experiences,” said McNeil.
His expertise in sustainable adventure travel will help advance Hurtigruten Expeditions’ ambitions to balance tourism growth with the environmental changes. This responsibility is central to the Hurtigruten Expeditions’ ambition to be the world’s most sustainable travel company including achieving net zero emissions by 2040.

McNeil believes viewing the expeditions and the destinations as an integrated unit is an important measure for success.
“We will explore nature and culture together with our guests and alongside those who live in the regions we visit. It will be important, for example, to integrate even more local expertise, local food and other local products and services than today,” said McNeil.
Contrasts mass tourism
Hurtigruten Expeditions’ 2023/24 season is the most extensive in Hurtigruten Expeditions’ more than 125 years of history. The forward-looking company are now rethinking what should be the actual content of a modern expedition cruise.
“We want to present new generations of guests with next-generation expeditions. Building on our existing mindset and offerings, we will invite modern-day explorers to expedition cruises that are genuinely life-changing – where sustainability, true exploration, learning and quality always come before quantity,” said CEO Lassesen.
The innovative push will create an even clearer alternative to quantity-oriented mass tourism.
“We are totally aligned with our guests, the local communities we sail to, and the crews of our small-sized, custom-build ships: Our primary focus will be on creating increased value – in the guest experience, for our partners, and for nature. Our quest is to transform expeditions into a regenerating and protective force in parallel with growing our presence to new corners of the world,” said Lassesen.
Alex McNeil’s previous role was as Director of Expedition Experience and Innovation at Quark Expeditions.

Hurtigruten Norway Unveils More Than 60 New Excursions for its First-Ever Premium Journeys Launching in 2023
The elevated Svalbard Express and North Cape Express itineraries will offer extended port visits, a first in the company’s 130-year history, allowing for new immersive experiences along Norway’s coast
Oslo, Norway (October 20, 2022) – Ahead of the official launch of the Svalbard Express and North Cape Express in 2023, Hurtigruten Norway has unveiled its new excursions for the highly anticipated premium offerings. An upgraded extension of the traditional Coastal Express, which connects 34 communities along Norway’s coast, the two new itineraries will offer half- and full-day port visits, a first in the company’s nearly 130-year history. Now available for booking online, the 63 optional excursions provide a significantly different experience for travelers searching for deep exploration.
“Extended port visits will allow travelers to spend more time exploring both land and sea,” explains Hurtigruten Norway CEO Hedda Felin. “While the refurbished MS Trollfjord will serve as a comfortable home base for guests with plenty to offer while onboard, these authentic, local excursions will allow guests to curate their own experience and develop an intimate connection with the destination. With the new excursions, travelers will gain knowledge of local culture, nature, geology, and history.”
Svalbard Express (Summer)
With its first departure on June 3, 2023, just one month ahead of Hurtigruten Norway’s 130-year anniversary, the Svalbard Express is a revival of the Coastal Express’ iconic summer cruise to Svalbard, which ended over 50 years ago. On average, guests will have six hours to explore 14 handpicked areas along Norway’s coast and Svalbard, the northernmost community on Earth, all while basking in the Midnight Sun. In addition to an array of optional excursions, the one-way journey (with both Northbound and Southbound options) includes two nights in Longyearbyen and two excursions: a wilderness evening at Camp Barentz and an adventure aboard the hybrid-electric catamaran MS Bard. Highlights of the new Svalbard Express excursions include:
Fishing in Lofoten: Guests will have an opportunity to soak up the fresh sea air and fish from a traditional 39-foot fishing cutter before cooking and eating their fresh catch on board.
Hiking and Birdwatching in Gjesværstappan Nature Reserve: For over five hours, travelers will hike through the spectacular Gjesværstappan nature reserve while keeping an eye out for razorbills, puffins, skuas, gannets, and eagles.
Legends of Torghatten and Brønnøysund; One of Norway’s most iconic places, Torghatten is known for its spectacular hole and the enthralling myths behind it. Travelers will hear enchanting myths and Viking stories while enjoying lefse, a traditional flatbread, over a fire pit.
Kayaking in Lofoten: For a close-up experience of Norway’s charming fishing villages, guests can explore Henningsvær aboard a two-person kayak and learn about the area’s rich history and culture from a local guide.
Træna Culture Walk – Poetry, Art, and Heritage: Travelers will see artwork, hear music, and taste local foods as they explore the chapels, cafés, and museums of Husøya, as well as take in spectacular views across the islands of Træna.
Arctic Dip – Sauna & Swim: In this invigorating experience, guests can enjoy a sauna in Træna’s oldest building, a boathouse that stands on the shore, before plunging into the Norwegian Sea.
All excursions available on the Svalbard Express itinerary can be found here.
North Cape Express (Winter)
For the first time ever, Hurtigruten will sail from Oslo, Norway’s vibrant capital, with the North Cape Express. Sailings will take place during the Northern Lights season and explore nearly the entire length of Norway’s coast. As with Hurtigruten Norway’s Coastal Express departures from the end of September through the end of March, the company offers its unique Northern Lights guarantee.
With the first North Cape Express departing on September 26, 2023, guests will have an average of six hours in each of the 16 selected ports, fjords, and islands. Highlights of the new North Cape Express excursions include:
North Cape and King Crab Experience: In this six-hour excursion, guests sample King Crab from the Barents Sea – served the traditional way, with soft bread, mayonnaise, and a slice of lemon – in the small village of Sarnes.
Dog Sledding in Alta: An exhilarating ride through a winter wonderland, this excursion takes guests to Alta, home to Europe’s longest dog sled race, for a day of dogsledding. After venturing into the wild, guests can share hot drinks around a crackling wood fire in a laavo, a Sami herdsman’s tent.
Whale Watching in Arctic Silence: Guests cruise silently aboard a specially designed, hybrid-electric boat, ensuring minimal disruption while watching for orca and humpback whales in their natural habitat.
Arctic Ice Fishing: After snowshoeing to an off-the-beaten-track location, adventure-seekers will cut their own whole in the ice and fish before tasting their freshly caught bounty back at the restaurant.
Snowmobiling to the North Cape: Travelers can discover the snow-covered landscape of the Arctic on this four-and-a-half-hour snowmobile adventure to the European mainland’s northernmost point.

Hurtigruten Expeditions completes industry-first fleetwide installation of SpaceX’s Starlink
STARLINK TO ANTARCTICA: With SpaceX’ innovative broadband service Starlink, Hurtigruten Expeditions’ guests are given access to high-speed connectivity while exploring. PHOTO: Oscar Farrera/Hurtigruten Expeditions
Hurtigruten Expeditions will be the first cruise line to implement SpaceX’s innovative broadband service Starlink across all ships. In cooperation with long-time connectivity partner Speedcast, the installation will be completed in October.
“As the world leader in exploration travel, it’s only fitting that we bring the world’s most innovative technologies onboard our ships to further enhance the experience and day-to-day lives for our guests, crew, partners and the communities we visit”, said Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen.
Speedcast and Hurtigruten Expeditions began testing and integration of Starlink terminals onboard the fleet of small-size expedition cruise ships in March. Installation will be complete by end of October – making Hurtigruten Expeditions the first cruise line to introduce the high-speed, low-latency connectivity across its entire fleet.
“We’ve seen major players announcing plans for implementation of Starlink connectivity. Our partnership with Speedcast and fleetwide introduction of the new service not only puts us ahead of the rest of the cruise industry, it also puts us ahead of the technology. When Starlink introduces maritime coverage in Antarctica and the Arctic, we will be ready,” said Lassesen.
“With vessels operating in some of the most remote and spectacular areas of the world, Hurtigruten Expeditions is an ideal partner for introducing groundbreaking technology in the cruise industry. Speedcast’s expertise lies in our ability to combine all available connectivity paths and manage a complete service that offers the highest levels of uptime, availability and performance”, said Joe Spytek, Chief Executive Officer at Speedcast.

Hurtigruten Expeditions is the world’s largest and leading expedition cruise line, with a growing fleet of smaller, more sustainable expedition cruise ships.
Guests, crew and scientists on all three Hurtigruten Expeditions ships that will explore Antarctica from this fall, will be the first to do so on ships able to connect through the faster broadband service. Starlink is slated to introduce Antarctic maritime coverage in Q4 2022.

The groundbreaking broadband internet solution – using a network of low-orbit satellites – will not only enhance the guest experience.
Through an industry-leading network of science partnerships, Hurtigruten Expeditions hosts scientists on every sailing on every ship. All ships feature signature Science Centers and a variety of science equipment, and all guests are offered to take part in citizen science programs. Faster and more reliable internet further enables delivery of science results from some of the most unexplored areas of the planet.
As one of few major cruise lines, Hurtigruten Expeditions offers free internet connectivity not only for guests, but also for all crew members.
“Introduction of new technology makes it easier for everyone on board to remain connected with friends, family and loved ones no matter where they are. We challenge all cruise lines that follows our example by installing Starlink to also follow our example to make internet free for all crew members”, said Lassesen.

Hurtigruten Group launches ESG report – calls for more transparency from travel industry
SAILING INTO THE FUTURE: MS Richard With in Raftsundet, Norway. PHOTO: Trym Ivar Bergsmo.
Hurtigruten Group opens its books on emissions and social responsibility and commits to science-based targets in its new ESG report. The adventure travel group emphasizes how reducing emissions must be the number one goal for travel companies while calling for greater transparency in the industry – particularly from those that operate cruise ships.
“We operate in an industry which negatively impacts the environment, so we have a collective responsibility to be more transparent and accountable when it comes to our natural and social impact. Sustainability is not a marketing exercise, it’s a core part of business. It’s a licence to operate and more importantly, it’s the right thing to do”, said CEO of Hurtigruten Group Daniel Skjeldam.
Among other things, the report details how the Group’s three business areas: Hurtigruten Norway, Hurtigruten Expeditions and Hurtigruten Svalbard achieved their own ESG milestones in 2021.
Last year, Hurtigruten Expeditions launched its third battery-hybrid ship MS Otto Sverdrup while MS Fridtjof Nansen was awarded the world’s most sustainable ship by Scope ESG and Stern Magazine. In addition, Hurtigruten Norway set in motion plans to launch Europe’s most environmentally fleet upgrade to reduce emissions by 25% and NoX by 80%, while Hurtigruten Svalbard partnered with Volvo Penta to develop it first hybrid day cruiser.
SETTING THE DIRECTION: MS Roald Amundsen at 70 degrees south (Antarctica). PHOTO: Werner Kruse
“I am extremely proud of our colleagues both at land and sea for achieving many other ESG successes despite operating in a pandemic. We have been a first mover on sustainability for decades, and we will continue to be a catalyst for change towards a greener travel industry - to protect what we love today, tomorrow and into the future”, Skjeldam added.
SETTING THE DIRECTION: MS Roald Amundsen at 70 degrees south (Antarctica). PHOTO: Werner Kruse.
The report offers an in-depth review of Hurtigruten Group’s path towards sustainable travel in the future. Among the highlights are its intention to launch the first zero emission ship on the Norwegian coast by 2030, have fully carbon neutral operations by 2040 and ultimately becoming emission free by 2050.
All these milestones recognize the importance of solid governance, environmental stewardship and social responsibility for the Group’s long-term business strategy and creating value for investors.
Hurtigruten Group’s ESG report for 2021 was developed in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standard. Please find a link to the report here.

Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express Introduces Culinary Ambassadors
Ahead of next year’s 130th anniversary, Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express is upping its game even more. Not just considered the most beautiful voyage in the world, it will also be a culinary experience of the senses. Collaborating with local suppliers is a vital part of the company’s food concept, Norway’s Coastal Kitchen, and they have partnered with two extraordinary chefs with close links to the beautiful Norwegian coast, to elevate the onboard gastronomy offerings.
The two award-winning chefs, Astrid Regine Nässlander and Halvar Ellingsen, not only share the same values as Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express, they both also hail from Northern Norway – where they live and work – which is where Hurtigruten was established back in 1893. They both rely on local suppliers and organic ingredients to create exceptional gastronomic experiences, a perfect fit for the onboard Coastal Kitchen concept.
“We always look for ways to connect with the local food traditions and the food culture along the Norwegian coast. Astrid and Halvar share our food philosophy, and both have the same unique connection with Northern Norway that Hurtigruten has. With them on board, we can use their deep local knowledge to develop and enhance our menus even more and inspire the next generation of Norway’s Coastal Kitchen chefs,” said Hedda Felin, CEO of Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express.
Local chefs from the Norwegian coast
Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express is proud to support fisheries, farms, butchers, and other small businesses along the Norwegian coast, as it has done for well over a century. The fresh farm-and-fjord-to-table flavors are an essential part of the journey, where guests will feel like a true traveler, not a tourist.
Astrid and Halvar will continue this culinary tradition and develop locally inspired, sustainably sourced, seasonal dishes served on board all seven ships in the fleet. They will train and inspire kitchen staff, and through a dedicated trainee program foster a new wave of talented Hurtigruten chefs.

Local produce and know-how
“What drives me is the urge to show people what we have around us, and that it’s possible to source food differently than just going to the supermarket. It’s old-fashioned common sense to get milk from a dairy farmer or meat from a moose hunter,” said Astrid Nässlander.
Astrid lives on the small island of Steigen opposite Lofoten in Northern Norway. This is the area where the 30-year-old award-winning freelance chef and small-scale sustainable meat producer sources all the ingredients she needs or wants.
“Hurtigruten and I share the same food philosophy. The Coastal Express is in many ways the true essence of Norway, and the food served on board represents the places where the ships sail,” she continues.

Highlighting local ingredients
Halvar Ellingsen, a former member of Norway’s national cooking team, is now Head Chef at the famous restaurant Kvitnes in Vesterålen. After ten years of living and cooking in Norway’s capital Oslo, Halvar decided to move back home to his family’s farm “to get in touch with the ingredients again”.
“I wanted to prove what short-travelled, sustainable food really is in practice,” said Ellingsen.
Kvitnes is virtually self-sufficient in vegetables, meat, herbs, and berries, sourcing almost all its ingredients from the nearby surroundings.
“As a young boy, I would hear the whistle of The Norwegian Coastal Express ships every day. It was a natural part of growing up on the coast. Even now, we have goods delivered to our restaurant from the ships every week,” Ellingsen said.
“I’m really looking forward to giving guests on the Norwegian Coastal Express food which both tastes great and highlights the ingredients of the areas they travel to.”
***
Astrid Nässlander’s and Halvar Ellingsen’s summer season menus will be available on board the Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express fleet in April and will change with the different seasons. Our Culinary Ambassadors will develop six dishes per season for the fine dining restaurant, one menu per year in the main restaurant, and two dishes for the bistro. They will also participate in workshops with the kitchen staff. In addition, Nässlander will deliver products to the ships, among them her famous moose sausages.

Guests will be able to choose from four different small-ship expedition cruises, ranging from four to eight nights – essentially covering the full span of the remote 19-island archipelago considered one of the most unique places on Earth.
"The iconic Galápagos can be considered a planet within planet Earth due to its distinct wildlife and pristine landscape. This is one of the most distinct and pristine destinations there is. We are exceptionally proud to offer even more chances to sustainably connect with this adventure travel treasure,” said Asta Lassesen, CEO of Hurtigruten Expeditions.

The six-night Eastern Galápagos itinerary that launches this January will be complemented with a four-night Northern Galápagos cruise, a four-night Western Galápagos cruise, and an eight-night combination covering Northern and Western Galápagos. All four options are now available to book for travel in 2023 and 2024.

In addition, Hurtigruten Expeditions expands the land-based pre and post-program, adding the award-winning luxury rainforest hotel Mashpi Lodge, located a few hours northwest of Quito, the capital of Ecuador, as a unique three-night pre or post-tour for any Galápagos cruise.
New small-ship experience
Hurtigruten Expeditions’ Galápagos guests will be the first to experience the “new” MS Santa Cruz II. Custom built for small-ship exploration, and with only 50 cabins and suites, the ship offers guests an intimate and comfortable way of exploring Galápagos. Leading up to the 2022 season, MS Santa Cruz II has undergone a multi-million dollar upgrade, including all public areas, cabins and suites – effectively operating as a virtually brand new ship with a light and modern Nordic design.
Besides the spacious Darwin Suites, the ship also has dedicated family and single cabins to suit diverse needs better. All cabins have also been upgraded with new mattresses and beddings. A separate upgrade is the dining menu, which now features vegan and more vegetarian options at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
UPGRADED FEATURES: The new Panorama bar and salon. Photo: Hurtigruten Expeditions / Metropolitan Touring
A Science Corner was also added during the upgrade in line with Hurtigruten Expeditions' industry-leading Science Program, offering guests to even deeper explore the true wonders of the archipelago that inspired Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.
"Our guests are modern-day adventurers, eager to curiously explore the unparalleled beauty of our planet. There really is no other place like the Galápagos Islands. We therefore invite guests to participate in scientific activities to develop a deeper understanding of the region we are exploring together. We have installed a Science Corner onboard Santa Cruz II, and trained our knowledgeable and passionate guides on the two Citizen Science projects to help guests get a better understanding of what they will discover and experience in this remarkable destination," said Dr. Verena Meraldi, Chief Scientist at Hurtigruten Expeditions.
NEW ADDITION: Santa Cruz II's new Lecture library. Photo: Hurtigruten Expeditions / Metropolitan Touring
While Hurtigruten Expedition’s maiden Galápagos voyage will be January 2022, the team behind the expedition cruises builds on the deepest experience in the region. Hurtigruten Expeditions has entered into a long-term partnership with Ecuador's’ Metropolitan Touring, that effectively founded expedition cruising in Galápagos more than 70 years ago.
This gives Hurtigruten Expeditions guests unique access to the local experience and knowledge, as well as exclusive access to the best landing sites in the Galápagos archipelago.
“The added itineraries and experiences are the result of what has proven to be a very fruitful partnership for the benefit of our valued guests. Our expanded offering will truly cover all the key areas of the Galápagos, which are all distinctively different from each other, offering guests an otherworldly experience combined with incredible wildlife, " said Lassesen.

Hurtigruten Expeditions launches more West African and South American expedition cruises
Hurtigruten Expeditions launches even more West African expedition cruises for 2023/24 – including one of the least visited destinations and national parks on the planet. More off-the-beaten-track exploration of South America and more North American National Parks are also among the news.
HEADING FOR WEST AFRICA: MS Spitsbergen offer big experiences by small ship. Photo: Verena Meraldi/Hurtigruten Expeditions
Hurtigruten Expeditions launches even more West African expedition cruises for 2023/24 – including one of the least visited destinations and national parks on the planet. More off-the-beaten-track exploration of South America and more North American National Parks are also among the news.
Hurtigruten Expeditions – the world’s largest and leading expedition cruise line – has rapidly expanded its global offering of small-ship expedition cruises in recent years, adding destinations such as the Galapagos, West Africa, the Caribbean, and the only year-round expedition cruises directly from Germany and UK to the Norwegian coast.
The 2023/24 season will be the most extensive in the company’s 125 years of exploration. Some of the new highlights includes:
Exploration of the remote and rarely visited parts of West Africa including Cape Verde and the Bissagos Island. The itineraries include four countries: Cape Verde, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Senegal, with MS Spitsbergen based out of Dakar, one of Africa’s most bustling cities. Hurtigruten Expeditions is the only cruise company offering West African-based cruises.
More small-ship Caribbean and Central American expedition cruises inviting guests to immerse in stunning scenery, pristine beaches, long lost cultures, and small communities – Hurtigruten Expeditions style.
North American national parks galore – visiting stunning natural reserves both on the east and west coasts of the United States
Even greener exploration on board the recently elected “World’s Most Sustainable Cruise Ship” MS Fridtjof Nansen – and identical sister ship MS Roald Amundsen
A brand-new, ten-day expedition cruise from Panama to Barbados.
A total of 32 expedition cruise packages where small-ship expedition cruising can be combined with land-based exploration of world renowned destinations such as Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, the Galapagos Islands, and Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio.

“Exploration is not solely about geography; it’s a mindset. We receive clear feedback from guests that they want to experience new ways to explore, and in more places. This is the reason why we continue to launch and expand our offerings to immerse in nature, culture, history, and science across the whole planet,” said Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen.
North American National Parks Galore

For the 2023/24 season, two hybrid-powered custom-build expedition ships will let guests explore nature reserves such as the western Redwood National Park and the Olympic Biosphere Reserve and National Park – and the eastern Acadia National Park and the Cape Cod National Seashore.
The twin hybrid ships MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen will offer six unique North American expedition cruises. As on all Hurtigruten Expeditions voyages, the voyages include scientists in the signature onboard Science Centers deepening the guest experience. Guests are also encouraged to partake in Citizen Science projects.
“We offer travel with learning and personal development. Our guests want their journey to have meaning and depth – while they explore unparalleled destinations leaving the lowest possible climate and nature footprint,” said Lassesen.
Bigger expedition teams – even more exploration and activities
XPEDITION EXPERTS: Highly skilled and experienced Expedition Teams accompany guests on all Hurtigruten Expeditions' cruises. Photo: Espen Mills/Hurtigruten Expeditions
All Hurtigruten Expeditions’ cruises feature a large on-board expedition team with experts handpicked for each itinerary. Building on more than 125 years of experience, Hurtigruten Expeditions offers the widest range of experts in the industry.
Leading up to the 2023/24 season, the size of the expedition team on all Hurtigruten Expeditions’ ships will be increased even further. More expedition equipment will also be added to the ships.
For the guests, this will mean a significant improvement, with an even wider range of activities to choose from – such as more kayaking, more small-boat exploration, hiking, lectures, science projects and other activities – and even more experts to indulge in knowledge and create a deeper understanding of some of the most spectacular destinations of the planet.
“In short, great will get even better. Our on-board colleagues, and the way they share their passion, knowledge, and expertise of the areas we explore is the core of the Hurtigruten Expeditions’ experience. Bigger expedition teams mean more of everything – more experts, more knowledge, more activities and more options for our guests,” said Lassesen.

For the first time in two years adventurous guests are again exploring Antarctica. “We are thrilled to share this long-awaited return with our guests”, said industry leader Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen.
As the season’s first guests set foot on pristine white Orne Harbour and Duse Bay – surrounded by snow-capped mountains and penguins curiously welcoming the modern explorers – it was a long-awaited reunion with the White Continent.
“Returning to this truly unique destination is a landmark reminder of its greatness and richness for all of us. And seeing the spark in the eyes of the guests who experience the lush wildlife, the rugged nature, and the interesting historical remains of early day exploration, is simply moving,” said expedition leader Tomasz Zadrozny of MS Roald Amundsen.
"Great news for South American travel industry"

Being back in Antarctica is also a milestone for the expedition cruise industry, including Hurtigruten Expeditions – the world's leading and largest expedition cruise line – after an almost two year-long pandemic pause in Antarctica operations.
“It is great news for the South-American travel industry to see the first ships safely, sustainably and responsibly exploring in Antarctic waters again. This activity is highly appreciated and of great value. There are no better ambassadors for this region than guests who have experienced and learned about these areas for themselves,” said Regional Director Ximena Castro of the Chilean National Tourism Service (SERNATUR).
Hybrid homecoming

The battery-hybrid powered MS Roald Amundsen, named after the first man to reach the South Pole, spent 1,5 days crossing the Drake Passage – the famed body of water that separates South America's Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica – before reaching the White Continent.
“This is a long-awaited dream coming true! We have spent the period since our last season in the deep South in preparations to offer even richer, unforgettable experiences at this one-of-a-kind destination. Now it all comes together between icebergs, penguins, seals, whales, birds, and other unique wildlife,” said Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen.
Hurtigruten Expeditions recently revealed a first preview of expeditions for 2023/2024 season including a series of new Antarctica voyages.
Preparing for unique solar eclipse

More than penguins, snow and the vast remoteness attracts visitors to return to Antarctica this December. Guests onboard MS Roald Amundsen are being offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to a front-row experience of the 2021 solar eclipse.
The December 4th solar eclipse is only visible in the Antarctic regions of the planet
“We will position the ship at a prime position outside the South Orkney Islands for the perfect spot to experience this spectacular natural phenomenon – if weather and other conditions permit”, said MS Roald Amundsen Master Remi Eriksen (pictured).
Post-pandemic adventure travel upswing

Learning, and understanding more about the areas explored, is key for the expedition experience, Master Eriksen explains. On all Hurtigruten Expeditions expedition cruises, guests are invited to draw on the knowledge and passion of hand-picked, 20+ members on-board Expedition Teams.
For this season, Hurtigruten Expeditions has returned to Antarctica with two ships – both departing from Chile. The battery-hybrid powered MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fram, bring guests to explore the White Continent from Punta Arenas, deep south in the country.
In addition to the South Pole continent and the surrounding islands, Hurtigruten Expeditions also invites guests explore South Georgia and the Falkland Islands.
Adventure travel is on the rise, and not only to Antarctica, according to Hurtigruten Expeditions.
“We experience very strong 2022 and future bookings clearly demonstrating a substantial pent-up demand for adventure travel also to other unparalleled destinations such as West Africa Cape Verde and the Bissagos Island,” said Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen.

Hurtigruten Expeditions marks 125 years of exploring by naming battery hybrid powered MS Fridtjof Nansen on Svalbard

In 1896, Hurtigruten Expeditions founded expedition cruising. 125 years later, what has grown to become the world’s leading and largest expedition cruise line is naming its battery-hybrid powered MS Fridtjof Nansen in the birthplace of expedition cruising – on the Arctic Archipelago of Svalbard.
Battery hybrid powered MS Fridtjof Nansen is the latest addition to Hurtigruten Expeditions' fleet of smaller, more sustainable ships. Packed with groundbreaking green technology, the next generation expedition cruise ship is designed for exploring some of the most spectacular destinations of our planet, building on Hurtigruten Expeditions’ more than 125 years of experience
Past and present exploration heritage is set to come alive, as Hurtigruten Expeditions’ will host MS Fridtjof Nansen’s naming ceremony in Longyearbyen on Svalbard September 14 – in the northernmost naming ceremony ever to be held for a passenger ship.
“When looking for a location for the naming of MS Fridtjof Nansen, we couldn’t think of a better place than Svalbard. For expedition cruising, this is where it all began”, said Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen.
The birth of expedition cruising
In the late 1800s, exploration of remote corners of the world was largely done by scientific expeditions, or was a luxury reserved for the few. As yachts and ocean liners made their way north, Hurtigruten Group founder Richard With saw a niche for combining local knowledge with smaller passenger ships. In 1896, what today is Hurtigruten Expeditions started a series of small-ship cruises from mainland Norway to the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. Aimed at international guests, the cruises included small-boat landings in places like North Cape and the remote Bear Island.
As the first small-ship company to offer a series of cruises to the Arctic Islands, Captain With not only embarked on the adventure that lead to Hurtigruten Expeditions. He effectively founded modern-day expedition cruising.
Much more than a destination

“For us, Svalbard and Spitsbergen is much more than just a destination; it’s a part of our history. As history has told us, we need to work closely with local communities when we develop sustainable tourism for future generations of explorers. When we embark on our Svalbard expeditions, we combine our 125 years of experience with our year-round land-based presence, creating jobs and value for the local community that lasts way beyond our cruise calls”, said Lassesen.
To further mark commitments and long-lasting relationship with the Svalbard community, Hurtigruten Expeditions has chosen Longyearbyen to be MS Fridtjof Nansen’s port of registry – making her the first cruise ship to proudly call the spectacular archipelago of Svalbard her home.
In the wake of exploration
Hurtigruten Expeditions’ newest vessel is named after one of greatest polar heroes and humanitarians of all times, Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930). Norwegian-born Nansen led the first expedition to ski across Greenland in 1888 and ventured further north than anyone else in history of exploration during his Fram expedition in 1893-1896. Nansen later devoted his life to international humanitarian work and diplomacy, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work for refugees following World War 1 and related conflicts.
“By naming this groundbreaking expedition ship after Fridtjof Nansen, on Svalbard, we wish to pay tribute to him by virtue of his achievements both as an explorer and a humanitarian. At the same time, we aim to honor the importance of Svalbard in Arctic exploration and tourism, not only in the past, but today”, said Lassesen.

“MS Fridtjof Nansen is the epitome of more than 125 years of exploration heritage. Her small size combined with strengthened hull and green technology, makes her able to explore waters where few other ships can go. Hosting scientists on every cruise, and featuring the on board Nansen Science Center as the beating heart of the ship, guests, scientists and crew will together create a deeper understanding of the areas we explore”, said Lassesen.
MS Fridtjof Nansen will be named by breaking a chunk of ice rather than the traditional bottle of Champagne, just as sister ship MS Roald Amundsen was when she in 2019 was the first ship ever to be named in Antarctica.
The naming ceremony is set to take place on September 14, and will be live streamed.

Hurtigruten Expeditions adds Russia as its latest cruise destination
The world leader in exploration travel will launch expedition cruises to Russia’s White Sea – combined with exploration of Murmansk, the UNESCO-listed Solovetsky Islands, and Norway’s North Cape
The world’s leading expedition cruise line, Hurtigruten Expeditions, is adding another new region to its ever-growing list of destinations: Russia, and particularly the White Sea in Russia’s far north. This unique itinerary follows the recent additions of expedition cruises to the Galapagos Islands, the Bissagos Islands and Cape Verde in Western Africa, and the Canary Islands and Madeira Islands, which will all launch in 2022.
“After a very challenging year for the entire travel industry, we are thrilled to finally return to cruising. 2022 is set to be our most exciting year ever, introducing a number of new exciting itineraries in three different continents. We see a huge pent-up demand for adventure travel, and much more to come still,” said Hurtigruten Expeditions CEO Asta Lassesen.
Hurtigruten Expeditions founded expedition cruising in 1896, and did the first expedition cruises the Russian Arctic more than 100 years ago.
Hurtigruten Expeditions’ new 17-day Expedition Cruise to the White Sea – Norway and Russia Adventure itinerary will depart Bergen, Norway, on October 6, 2022, and sail north along the Norwegian coast and include several of the country’s highlights: stunning fjords, the mesmerizing Lofoten Islands, visiting settlements rich in fishing traditions and Sami history, and the North Cape, the northernmost point of the European mainland.
Then follows seven days in Russia, traveling to one of the least visited parts of the country. The itinerary combines modern-day Russian cities and historic ports with expedition landings, coming ashore at rarely visited and isolated villages on the shores of the White Sea. The trip also includes visiting the fascinating Solovetsky Islands, one of Northern Russia’s iconic sights. As always, Hurtigruten Expeditions’ onboard expert team will give guests an insight into the history and culture of the places they visit.
"Another dream destination"

“Russia’s White Sea is another dream destination our patrons have asked for when surveying our previous guests, just like the Galapagos and Western Africa. Finally, guests will now be able to go to Russia’s best-kept secret, the White Sea, which very few travelers ever get to experience. And considering we carried out our first expedition cruise to Russia more than 100 years ago, we’re extremely excited to have Russia as a destination again finally,” said Lassesen.
Among the many highlights of this new itinerary, guests will be able to soak up Russian culture and history in two of its most northern cities. They will see old Soviet-era monuments and learn about the wartime and maritime past in Murmansk before taking in the beautifully preserved architecture of Arkhangelsk, the cultural and historical capital of Russia’s north.
ITINERARY: The new 17-day cruise includes the highlights of the Norwegian coastline and Russia's White Sea region.
Guests will explore Norway and Russia on board the popular MS Spitsbergen, which was named Best small cruise ship in Cruise Critic Cruisers’ Choice awards 2018. With only 180 guests on board, she provides a uniquely intimate and exclusive setting onboard. MS Spitsbergen also features a variety of expedition equipment, as we all as Hurtigruten Expedition’s signature state-of-the-art Science Center. The industry-leading Science Program includes a wide range of Citizen Science research projects that guests are encouraged to participate in during their trip.
Besides the new itinerary for Russia’s White Sea, MS Spitsbergen will also offer a 23-day Grand Expedition cruise from Tromsø, Norway, to Lisbon, Portugal. The journey can be cut to a smaller trip departing from Hamburg, Germany, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, or Dover, the United Kingdom, to Lisbon. The ship then continues to serve Western Africa’s waters from November of 2022 to March of 2023. It will operate sailings to the Canary Islands and Madeira Islands, and the Bissagos Islands and Cape Verde from Dakar, Senegal.
