Tourism Cares Salutes Abercrombie & Kent at 2016 Hearts of Travel Awards
     
  “Legacy in Travel Philanthropy” honors A&K Philanthropy’s efforts to positively impact lives and livelihoods around the world    
     
DOWNERS GROVE, IL – December 16, 2016.... Abercrombie & Kent was recognized with the Legacy in Travel Philanthropy Award at Tourism Cares Hearts of Travel Awards in New York last night, recognizing the luxury travel provider’s long term impact in corporate philanthropy.

The judges honored Abercrombie & Kent’s thirty-year commitment to giving back through A&K Philanthropy (AKP). In 2016 alone, corporate contributions, guest contributions and the value of in-kind donations totaled more than $2.5 million. In addition to managing 30 projects across seven continents, AKP also employs full-time community development professionals in eight countries.

A&K covers administrative expenses so that 100 percent of every guest donation goes directly to the project of their choice. “This significant commitment is due in large part to Jorie Butler Kent, founder and president of A&K Philanthropy,” explains Keith Sproule, executive director, AKP. “She inspired the company to make this level of commitment long before it became widely recognized that it was so important to do.”

The awards celebrate excellence in travel giving and volunteering, looking holistically at the corporation and not just individual projects. These awards are part of the Tourism Hall of Fame started in 1996 and long administered by Tourism Cares.

After an open call for nominations, 20 companies were nominated for the Legacy in Travel Philanthropy and New Innovators awards. The committee scored submissions in the following areas: theory of action and execution (problem statement, activities, and outcomes); community engagement; storytelling; communications and advocacy; integration into their core business; and overall financial commitment.

Tourism Cares chose four winners for excellence in corporate giving and volunteering. Abercrombie & Kent and Universal Orlando Resort: the Legacy in Travel Philanthropy, honoring sustained impact for more than 15 years; AFAR Media for the New Innovators award, recognizing impact in just 3-6 years; and Jonathan Tisch for the Personal Philanthropic Leadership award, for devoting a lifetime to active citizenship and corporate responsibility.
