The Crane Resort - Barbados
Monday, April 30, 2012

A lot of cruises now embark and disembark in Barbados. And, this island is an excellent place to spend a few days to relax and unwind after your long flight before you board your cruise, or after your cruise before your flight home. Like most islands in the Caribbean, Barbados is all about the sun, the beach, relaxation and rum punch!

Before we boarded Silversea Silver Spirit for our April 2012 transatlantic sailing, we booked a night at The Crane Resort in Barbados. As is the case with many flights to Barbados, our American Airlines flight from Miami did not even land in Barbados until 10pm. There is simply no way to fly into Barbados from DFW on the day of embarkation.

The 20-minute taxi ride from the airport to The Crane was uneventful and found us at the Reception desk around 10:45pm. Check-in was quick and easy and was made even easier with a complimentary glass of their fantastic rum punch. Soon, we were being escorted to our suite which was huge! The Crane offers residential-style suites that have separate living room, bedroom, kitchen, and two full bathrooms. Some of these are actually sold as residences, so they have everything you could ever want in long-term accommodations. What a waste to only experience this for one night!

Guests can book a suite at The Crane for any number of nights. We recommend at least three, and five to seven would be preferable. It just depends on how much relaxation you desire. The suites are perfect for families since they have fully equipped kitchens (stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher) and even a washer and dryer!

Suites on the first floor have plunge pools, a nice feature for those with kids, or even for those without. Even if you don't get a plunge pool, not to worry, there are huge, beautiful pools spread out all around the complex. They also have the biggest outdoor jacuzzi I have ever seen! The grounds at The Crane are nothing short of spectacular with manicured lawns, towering palm trees, flowers, shrubs and dramatic views of craggy cliffs and the azure waters of the Caribbean sea. This is a sun and sea lover's paradise.

Coy fish ponds are located at each building

Each suite enjoys complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi and, get this: complimentary International telephone service! That's right, call home and talk as long as you like, it is all included thanks to the property's voice-over-ip phone system.

There are five restaurants on the property, a few shops and even a small General Store where you can buy "provisions". Once you arrive at The Crane, you really never need to leave for anything.

If you love to spend your days roasting away on a white sand beach, The Crane has that, too. Even though all beaches in Barbados are public, we saw no evidence of crowding on the huge beach located at The Crane. The waves here are significant, however, so kayaking and wave runners are not possible.

Talk about an amazing view of the Caribbean!

A large white sand beach awaits guests at The Crane

I only wish we had been able to spend more than one night at The Crane. I would love to be able to tell you about the restaurants, spa and other facilities. Maybe we will get an opportunity in the future? With five different restaurants on property, there's really no reason to ever leave the complex. Zen, the Thai restaurant is Zagat's #1 rated for food in Barbados! D’Onofrio’s Trattoria is the resident Italian eatery while The Carriage House offers casual poolside dining. The Coconut Grove Beach Bar & Grill offers a casual beachfront dining experience and the highly awarded L' Azure offers International/Caribbean cuisine with amazing views of the ocean.

The next time we sail into or out of Barbados, The Crane will be at the top of our "to-do" list for places to stay!
